I forgot to add- you could have them decorate their own cupcakes- provide frosting in a couple of colors/flavors and little bowls with lots of different topppings. This idea also works well for mini pizzas as kids that age love to make their own food creations!

definitely choose some kind of project for them. A couple of ideas: buy some unfinished wooden toy cars and have each of them paint their own or copy the idea on here of putting painter's tape all over your floors for pretend roads and make buildings out of shoe boxes (we used google images and printed out pics of the front of his favorite stores/places and taped them on the front of the shoe boxes) and have a hot wheels party- my 3.5 yr old son played with his hotwheels and our pretend city/roads for a week straight! The marshmallow and toothpick structure building game where you make two teams and have the kiddos work together to build a structure out of marshmallows and toothpicks (uncooked spaghetti noodles broken into smaller pieces also works well)- my son loves this as well! Basically, your best bet is to have a couple of structured games/projects for them to do at a big table and keep the party short 1-2 hours max so the kids don't get too restless being inside a confined space and you should be good to go!

these are definitely some of my top faves and where we drew inspiration from when creating our son's big boy room. Dallas' room is my top fave- I actually went to the Alameda Antique Fair after reading about it on here- so much fun!!

we have had some great flights and some really difficult ones. The best one we had was when our little guy was around your little one's age! We have always had great luck with one of us taking him to the back (where the flight attendants convene) to play on the ground for a few minutes. We chat it up with the flight attendants and they have always been fine with us hanging out there for a few minutes a couple of times during the flight- this really saved us from many meltdowns and gave our little one excitement to get out from the tight seats. Also- lots of standing up time and using my lap as the play area where I would put a toy and have him stand on the ground facing me. We also let him play at our feet- I was uber grossed out by the germ factor but realized it was not worth him having a meltdown over. The above comments and suggestions are great- we did the same as far as new/different toys and loads of snacks. Best of luck to you- no matter how intimidating it may seem- you can do it!!

we are also foster parents- soon to be adoptive parents- wahoo! I would totally go for some red, yellow and turquoise or orange, yellow and turquoise. I'm not one for themed rooms at all but I defnitely think you can find some fun fabrics in these colors and hang some fun tissue paper poms in different colors from the ceiling and put a few fun prints on the wall. Also- a rug is a must for making it feel more inviting and having a great place for them to play on the floor. All these little touches will make it feel a lot more like home for the kiddos coming to live with you. I also would allow them to choose some things that they like to decorate the room with- obviously this would only work if they are preschool age and up.

I did this activity with the kids I used to work with all ranging in age from 6-16 yrs old but we used spaghetti noodles (uncooked, of course) instead of straws to see how tall of towers they could build without having them collapse. The kids and grownups all had SO much fun with this activity.
