@ridge: I'm looking at the Container Store website, and I can't find the laundry station that you mention. It would be perfect for our place...do you mind providing a link? Thanks!

I did what tkelley did--took the top off, reassembled while making sure that all the screws were tightened equally, and that fixed the wobbling. ...And I just have to roll my eyes at the furniture snobs that always need to put in their (non-constructive) 2 cents about IKEA stuff. The Docksta looks way better than the CB2 table, and with all the money saved, I got to surround my super-cheap Docksta with 4 ebony Eames DCM chairs. I'll take expensive (and comfortable) chairs over an expensive dining table any day!

We recently replaced the track lighting in our bedroom with a single ceiling fixture. The electrical wiring was through a single hole in the ceiling in the middle of the track--so that part was easy to figure out. However, the sides of the track were also mounted to the ceiling with separate screws running along the length of the track. That part was more tricky--because those extra holes had to be filled in with mesh tape and drywall plaster and then sanded down (and sanding the ceiling is not easy). So if you want to replace the track lighting with a ceiling fixture, it's do-able, but may require some elbow grease. (I hate track lighting by the way, it seems very dated to me, but our new house is full of it. Yuk!)

Luca: do you have a source for the lights mounted on your "headboard" in the bedroom? I have been looking for something like that? Thanks!

I agree, it is possible to raise a child in a small space. Think about the things that people list as baby 'essentials.' Are they really all that essential?

Changing table = change on the bed
Baby's bed = co-sleep with parents as toddler, sleep on pull-out couch when school-aged
A desk to do craft project/homework = coffee table or kitchen table
A space 'of the baby's own' = shared communal space with loving parents

This is how my husband's family (2 adults, 2 kids) grew up in a 1-bedroom apt in Los Angeles. He does not look back on it as a hardship, and they are certainly a very close-knit family!

Crate-training is the best thing we ever did for our pup--and, yes, it's not easy at first. Please don't be swayed by any nay-sayers (especially those who have obviously never owned a dog!). As our dog has gotten older and had more medical problems--first back problems, then he needed leg surgery--crate-training or some other method of confinement for 2 whole months was an absolute *necessity* for healing, according to our vet. If our dog hadn't already been crate-trained, imagine how traumatic it would have been to start from scratch, and while he was recovering from an operation!

I think there are some great suggestions above--what worked for us was switching to a different kind of crate (wire instead of plastic), and crating sometimes when we were just hanging out in the same room (not just when we were leaving the apartment).

Eames DCM/DCW molded plywood chairs!

They are the most comfortable dining chairs I have ever owned. I recently put them to the test by spending 8 hours/day sitting at the kitchen table while studying for an exam, with no butt pain whatsoever. We have them in ebony, but with the new cute colors available this year, I might have purchased them in yellow or green instead!

Anyone check out Ninaribena's Fall Colors entry over on AT:SF http://sanfrancisco.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/fall-colors-2007-northwest/5-ninaribenas-lighthearted-playful-colour-033470 ? I love her 'landing strip' and have been looking for storage cubbies with rounded corners like the ones in the 3rd picture (so much cooler than a regular old shoe bench). She's in Australia, but does anyone know where I can find a similar product in the U.S.? Thanks!

I really love the accent color throughout, it ties the rooms together so nicely! This is definitely color that is 'livable,' well-edited, and not overwhelming. And I've been looking for storage cubbies (2nd picture) like the ones in your landing strip FOREVER--with rounded corners, not straight edges. I know you're in Australia, but can anyone help me out with an online source or a stateside store? Thanks!
