I have a question - I have a down alternative comforter that I had dry cleaned last year, before packing it up for the spring/summer/fall. When I unpacked it to put on my bed for winter, I realized the stuffing in a lot of the panels had bunched up, so my comforter is rather lumpy now. I've tried to smoosh each panel to loosen up the lumps and even out the stuffing, but I wasn't too successful. Anyone have a solution for this? I hate that I can't get it to flatten out. Thanks.

Thanks for all of your suggestions AT folks! I did speak with my landlord, who has since made a few changes that seem to have helped with the (lack of) heat. I've also got a rug coming in today, and a couple of little things I'm doing. It's been warmer here in NY for the past couple of weeks, but temps are dropping, so this will be the test!

@Mlle Kate - steam heat is the most common here in NYC, it's a really old system, from what I understand, and heats most older buildings. It is controlled from a central location via thermostat, so only when it detects the temp at a certain level, and residents do not have individual control over it in their apartments. Apartments on higher floors of larger buildings are usually really warm, since heat rises, and sometimes they have to open a window to let some of it out!

BTW - those pics are not of my apartment, the awesome folks at AT put those up to illustrate the concrete walls. ;-)

Thanks for the advice everyone! My apologies... concrete walls, not cement (thanks for the correction). I'm shopping for a good, affordable rug, and the rug pad sounds like a good idea. I'm also shopping for curtains. And I did just get a digital thermometer, which is how I found out just how cold my little home is. I will be putting in a call to the landlord today to give him the stats. I am on the 2nd floor (of 2) and I've noticed recently that my neighbors are almost never home, most likely sleeping in a warmer place!

Now that I know the required temp and hours for NYC, I will be letting the landlord know, and hopefully he will turn the heat up or keep it on more consistently. I've been using a space heater, but let's be real, those things are best when you're sitting on top of them, and if the heat is seeping out of the walls, this is not very energy efficient (or cost effective for me!). Meanwhile, I layer on the fleece and down vest, cook something hot and delicious, and drink lots of tea.

@ mannequingirl - what does using 2 space heaters do to your electric bill?? I'm afraid to get mine this month.

@ dontoearth - I have steam heat, but it's controlled by the landlord, not me, so it's not on consistently, only during certain hours.

@ Emily the Cat - I just moved in a few months ago so I'm on a lease. The cost of moving (and just finding a place) in NYC is pretty high, not to mention the hassle, so I'm hoping to find a less expensive solution.

I cut them in half, toss with olive oil, s&p, and whole cloves of garlic (leave the skin on and just smash a bit) and roast cut side down at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes or until tender and tasty. Love...

For the fearful, sautee a few slices of diced bacon until crispy, remove and set aside. Cut brussels in half, sautee in the bacon grease until nice and browned, then add a little broth or water. Cover to steam for a few min, then remove the lid and cook off the liquid. Add the bacon back in, toss and enjoy! Most people love bacon, so it can help turn many a brussel sprout hater into a major fan!

I have a brand new (3 months) fridge/freezer in my rental apartment. It recently started making a popping sound (quite loud) and the freezer is frosting, so when I open the freezer, the top is covered with ice crystals. I removed everything this weekend, cleaned out all the "snow" and put everything back, but it's still doing it. Does anyone know what's causing all of this? I'm definitely going to alert my landlord tomorrow, but I'm curious anyway.

@ chryseas27 - You could use aluminum foil, although it might affect cooking time a bit, since it would conduct heat differently than parchment paper. Enjoy!

I downsized last fall, when I moved out of a (roughly) 450sf, 2bdrm apartment I shared with my then boyfriend. I got a cute little studio, which is about 340sf, with nothing but a case study daybed (which was our couch), coffee table, and a marble bistro table, and a bunch of boxes. Since then I have accumulated furniture that fit with the layout of my apartment. Now I'm moving again - to a charming but tiny 300sf studio in Manhattan. I've sold the daybed and coffee table and plan to buy something new, sort of a fresh start. I'm a little concerned about how my stuff will fit into a smaller space, but also a little intrigued by the challenging of arranging my things, since they were all purchased to fit my current space. I'll definitely be consulting Apartment Therapy's Small Cool entries from the past!

I roasted chestnuts in the oven a few winters ago. I took special care to cut the "x" in each one, but we had quite a disaster when some of them literally exploded in the oven, and even on the counter 5 minutes after I took the tray out! I'm scared to try this again...

Hi Larry -

Thanks for the info about the kitchen table - luckily (or unluckily?) I am going to Ikea this weekend so I'll be on the lookout for it. According to the website, they have it in the taller height (41-3/8" high) in the new Brooklyn store.

Are the cabinets and the drawer unit next to the table also Ikea?

Could I ask where you found the white table and unit next to it (in the kitchen)? I just moved into a new apartment with a long empty wall, and that's exactly what I've been looking for!
