I did two things: 1) live off of the farmer's market, a pint of tomatoes, crackers and cheese could be dinner. 2) I borrowed a friend's kitchen for an evening and made a big batch of baked ziti and macaroni and cheese, etc. so that I had some more real food (stored in the freezer so that it could be taken out and reheated as necessary). Other than that, sandwiches became a lot of my evening meals.

Any recommendations for where to get a simple vanity mirror/cabinet for the bathroom. I want it to be about 30" across, thin silver rim around the mirror. Nothing elaborate and ideally nothing that costs a small fortune. Any ideas on where to start looking? Thanks

What a fun rug! I'd love it for my living room.

Anyone know where to get subway tiles? Just plain, white subway tiles. I don't need too many - just the surround of a sink area. I don't see them online at Home Depot. Any suggestions? Thanks

Question - I love the fireplace, especially how bright it is - my current fireplace has black tiles on the ground and fake painted brick on the inside. Does anyone know how to re-tile the area in-front of the fireplace? Does it require special tiles or special heat-resistant grout? (There is still a gas fireplace in the fireplace). Thanks

For gretchenalexis for flooring: I have a negative rec: DC Floors in Takoma are terrible (as in talk to the police because of the threatening behavior of the owner) and apparently are equally terrible to everyone in the neighborhood - I was never followed by the owner, but apparently some of my neighbors had very scary encounters with him in that regard. My recommendation - see if you have a neighborhood listserve and ask for any floor recommendations.

While I do love the truly wrinkly free button down shirts that I have, unfortunately I only have two, and the rest of my button downs seem to love wrinkles. So whenever I need to wear a button down (as opposed to a knit shirt), I pull it out of the closet, frantically iron in my room and run off to work. I also iron frequently when I sew. I have been borrowing my roommate's iron for the past 4 months as my attempt to clean my iron resulted in somehow killing the iron, but she's moving out, so I'm desperate for a good iron!

Question: How did you attach the wood to the brick (i.e. what type of screws/any prep work necessary?)

One of my big goals for the summer is to grow my own herbs (basil for pesto and for tomato and mozzarella salads), mint, cilantro, etc. I would love to have some pots to put them in (I've heard mint can spread like a weed in a garden and should really be in a pot). If the pots were large enough I'd grow tomatoes (home-grown always taste the best in tomato sandwiches).

Favorite thing to eat with tea? That's easy - homemade scones (my mom always did plain scones, with whipped cream and jam, but I found a great recipe for scones with orange zest and dried cranberries). Also good - adding a dollop or lemon curd to either scone.

Not cardamom (a 2 week trip to India has created a serious cardamom aversion), but either mustard or cloves (I realize that those are two very different spices, but I love cloves in cookies, and mustard in my main course dishes).

oh! I've been looking for one just like this! A somewhat recent 'Real Simple' had a bunch of crock-pot recipes that looked really good (especially a black bean and pork stew), but alas, I have no crock-pot.

Oh that's gorgeous - I haven't updated my bed covering since college, when a quilt and/or blanket was sufficient. So now I have two blankets and two quilts covering my bed - I would love a light, gorgrous duvet like this.

Two options - for herbal I love ginger tea, for real tea, I love lady grey (it's a bit milder than earl grey)

Oh I love that tray - I have 2 trays given to me by my grandmother, but I would love that tray to make all of the trays a little more up-to-date!

I'd like to have a "catch up with old friends who apparently just moved back to the area" sort of party - and what better way to do that then with a nice, informal dinner party?

dark chocolate, but I am rather partial to any kind of chocolate if it has a hint of fruit to it (those chocolates in the shape of an orange that you whack to break into orange-chocolate segments, the ghiradelli with raspberry, the Hershey's dark with little bits of dried cranberries and dried blueberries - all so good). But I'm also intrigued by the intense dark chocolate - I want to make Mark Bittman's chocolate truffles.
