I'm now officially a Ludite. This creeps me out me WAY more than cloning human beings.

I've lately taken to carrying a handkerchief in my coat pocket because I'm tired of having wads of linty, crumpled tissues in there, but honestly I feel kind of guilty blowing my nose on handmade hem-stitched linen created by my great-grandmother. It's almost enough to drive me back to paper, but I love how retro a handkerchief is.

I suppose they're better for the environment (or are they? I have to wash them & iron them, after all..) but like most things i do that could be passed off as "green" it's really more an attempt to respect my frugal and practical upbringing. If that happens to cause less damage to the environment, and it usually does, all well and good. But I'd be a total hypocrite if I claimed that was my primary motivation.

Thanks, happify, for the idea of vintage hankies - I suspect it won't trouble me nearly as much to use someone else's Great-grammie's handiwork when my nose is running.

There's only one x-mas song for me: Judy Garland singing "Have yourself a merry little Christmas"...

I gave up coffee for about 6 months once, but only because I drank a huge cup I'd been craving all day immediately after leaving the hospital after arthroscopic knee surgery.

I spent the next 2 days lying on the couch with my leg elevated & a bucket next to me for the waves of general anesthesia-caused nausea that kept me utterly miserable. I couldn't even look at a cup of coffee without feeling sick for what seemed like forever. The first time I smelled it without feeling sick I felt re-born. I have so few vices left I can't afford to give up anything these days for fear I'll wake up in a convent.

I see a DIY tiki-bar theme party in someone's future. I just hope it isn't mine.

It really is about how the space is used. I'm moving from a 2 (tiny) bedroom apt. of 750 sq.ft to a 1 bedroom about the same size next week. I was in the same boat as Katef - almost 25% of my total sq. footage was a super-long hallway that was only used as a place for my cats to run laps and deposit cat-fur tumbleweeds. The second bedroom was the perfect place collect junk I was to lazy to either throw away or take down to the basement for long-term storage. It's a nice home for a couple, but my life has changed since I moved in, and the space was in all the wrong places for a single person who loves to cook and have friends over for dinner.

The new apartment seems huge in comparison, it has a galley kitchen with a full sized stove & dishwasher instead of the 24" wide NYC models I've had for the last 11 years. I wanted an eat-in kitchen and I actually got an ity-bity dining room - more than I would have dared to expect in my price range. Yet when my mother sees it (though suburbanite eyes) she'll think I paid way too much for a place she'll be too polite to tell me is really small.

Silver is used in prescription creams for burns - it has an anti-bacterial effect, so I think goodnightdean is onto something with the julep cup. I may have to get one much as I hate polishing silver. They've a nice size for a small night table arrangement.

Lorca- any advice on sources for flower frogs? One huge regret I have is that when my Grammie sold her house, I didn't ask for the brown pottery bowl with a built in frog that she used to put zinnias in ever summer... I have one of those japanese ikebana pin things you put inthe bottom of a vase I sometimes use, but a frog is much easier. I've never seen a pianted one though, only clear glass or ones that are part of the vase.

Isn't it amazing we all survived childhoods full of bleach and bike riding without helmets and non-organic foods? I'm getting post-traumatic stress disorder just thinking about it!

My little boy Malkin could be Rufus's littermate, and I've wanted to cover a sofa in velvet that matches his fur since he was a kitten.

At $107/yd. it's absurdly expensive, and probably not the least bit practical either, but the best match I ever found was a mohair velvet by Sina Pearson called Dunes in the color "Feather Grass".

Good luck
