I have a previous gen Apple TV and am quite happy with it for what it is. I don't blame Apple, because I don't think it's possible to get a TV/media computer/content provider RIGHT given the legal, technological and market hurdles these products face. 5 Things We Love About Apple ... & 5 We Hate |

I think one of the most appealing aspects of MCM pieces (especially the originals) is that they were designed for the smaller American dwellings of the time (1940s and 1950s) so their scale and style are more flexible for smaller spaces, and that's a REALLY attractive alternative to mainstream American furniture, which is often large and clunky and scaled for the McMansions of the 1990s and 2000s. chirho is correct -- I remember the family I stayed with in London in 1992 had tankless water heaters, a big plus in a small, older home built before indoor plumbing. These are only now catching on across the pond. Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters | Apartment Therapy Unplggd |

Last time I was at Ikea, I tried out a bunch of their chairs for comfort. I thought the Urban was pretty good, especially with the back and seat cushion inserts. I thought it was a very nice balance of sturdiness and flexibility/comfort. But chairs, like most furniture, are really individual choices. There's no substitute for sitting in it. I second the idea of painting the wood -- any number of color possibilities -- black, white, orange, lime green(?). That would give the chairs a contemporary spin while preserving that groovy velvet! Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Ideas for a Chair Redo? |

The best advice for moving is don't. The second best is get rid of EVERYTHING before you move. After our last move, we filled up our ginormous Honda Pilot 4 or 5 times (and I mean filled every spot but the driver's seat) with donations. Why did we pay to move, store, then move again all that stuff?!?! Moving is THE best opportunity to edit your possessions, including pantry items, clothes (especially the kids), books, music, you name it. Moving really highlights the cost of dragging all that stuff around in your life. Apartment Therapy Chicago | How To: Save Money (and Sanity) During a Move |

The key question is whether the product is at a Target STORE or from the Target WEBSITE. Products in the stores, especially the furniture, are not going to be very high quality or very durable. However, the website is a completely different beast, offering a range of products, including some fairly high end modern/contemporary designs. I agree that for its size, the price seems very good. Although the quality might not be there. I like the idea of painting an unfinished piece. I did some web searching but couldn't find anything quite comparable that wasn't already about $800. BUT, if you can find an unfinished furniture store near you, pay them a visit and see what they have. Sometimes you can get lucky with clearance pieces. If you go the unfinished route, get something in maple, alder, aspen, ash (NOT pine), as these woods are pretty hard and take paint BEAUTIFULLY. I painted my son's nursery dresser and changing table. I thought it would be a chore but it was one of the easiest, most successful projects I've ever done. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Similar Chiffonier for Less? |

One of the best ways to be durable in the kis to own as little as possible -- figure out what you need and get it, and nothing more. I've had to do that continuously for 20 years now because of small urban kitchens. The less you buy, the easier it is to afford decent quality stuff. Conversely, if you think the decent quality stuff costs too much, that's often a good signal that you don't really need it. Every time I see the price for a good panini maker, I remind myself that I am content, on those rare occasions I want a smushed toasted sandwhich, to stand at the stove and press down on the top of the sandwhich with a sturdy spatula. I live 5 blocks from the new president, but on the wrong side of what used to be the DMZ line between "good" and "bad." It's the most beautiful street I've lived on, even though it still has a few vacant lots. It is beautiful, and safe, because of the largely African-American heroes who stayed when the neighborhood declined, prevented tear-downs, and worked hard for years to get redevelopment going. I'm always grateful to them. Having lived in the city of Chicago for almost 16 years, I can say that unless a neighborhood is experiencing active gang violence, it's gonna be pretty safe for regular, law-abiding folks. Yes, the odd robbery occurs on the street, and those are scary, but given the population density the odds of that happening to YOU are still pretty low. In fact, living on the South Side has been much safer than when we lived in trendy Wicker Park (about 10 years ago) where we had gunshots at our house, graffiti, break-ins, belligerent homeless, arson in nearby homes, and very poor police service. This seems like a great time to ask this question -- I've long admired the aesthetics of these wood mats, but I have this strong fear that, with wet feet, they will be very slippery. Can users of them comment on this? Are they slippy when wet, or do they have a surface texture that offers good traction? Thanks! Apartment Therapy Chicago | Wooden Mats that Double as Boot Trays |

I think those cool, slim Euro-radiators are warm water systems. In contrast, places like Chicago tend to have old steam-based systems which get REALLY hot. I would therefore worry that Kitty might get roasted on a Chicago radiator cozy. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Cat Radiator Beds from the UK |

I think it's an awesome looking house! The purple and orange are in nice proportion and position, and really complement the metallic facade and the blue tint of the windows. Sure, the landscaping could be better, but so could most house's. Way to go KC! I sure wish we saw more innovative design like this in Chicago's re-developing 'hoods. We've had this same problem in the master bedroom. We solved it in the short run with a cable-suspended shelf (e.g., from Container Store or Chiasso). It really doesn't look very good, mainly because the cable box is HUGE (it's a digital cable box with DVR), so floating a shelf big enough looks really ungainly. Many options that WOULD look cool (like a LACK shelf from IKEA), really won't work if you have one of these large cable/DVR boxes. You're right on about the milkweed and Monarch butterflies. In fact, milkweed is the preferred food for monarch caterpillars--it's what my son's class always collects when they "raise" Monarchs. I don't have the references, but I have seen on TV paint systems for laminate and melamine, which is basically what things like the LACK are clad in. I would do some internet searching. It strikes me as a belated and half-hearted attempt to reclaim home furnishings shoppers lost to Target and Ikea. There doesn't seem to be enough here, and certainly not enough style, to bring Wal-Mart into line with their more hip competitors. Apartment Therapy Chicago | What's the Story?: Canopy and Wal-Mart |
