Are you guys kidding? The before looks like Lucifer's lair. Those window treatments are like dripping blood, it gives me the heebiejeebies. I was just going to comment that I'm amazed at how much better it looks with just those few updates, and I think she did a great job of incorporating the red/orange of the countertop and sink into her new color scheme - I actually really like the pop of color there.

have you never been to the beach?

in the summer I'd take an outdoor shower over an indoor one any day... though I do prefer the ones with a little privacy :)

I also saw those chairs at Target last week - $30 each and they had them in yellow and white.

Even if you don't have an extra deep mattress, get an extra deep fitted sheet... I got mine at the Company Store and it's great b/c the elastic goes all the way around and tucks and tightens under the mattress. Kind of like if you pulled a shower cap down over your entire head (do not try this at home). Good luck!

Ooh. I second the roman shades comment. Hanging any kind of curtains in this space will end up blocking part of the window, limiting your light and making your windows seem smaller. A nice roman shade across the whole space would look just as pretty and soft, and would give you even better light protection when you put them down, vs trying to draw they curtains at night.

Ha! I was recently admiring the same exact wall treatment on the big wall by the elevators at ABC in NY. Thinking about getting a few baskets and doing a wall in my apt.

Scale, scale, scale! If you have a small space use small pieces that fit the scale of the apartment. A tiny living room has so much more style with a loveseat, side chair and stool than with one big L-shaped sofa...

Ikea has other bookcases besides Billy that are a bit more traditional looking... like these for example:

add some crown molding and maybe take the legs off and i think they would look great. ooh and paint them (and the walls) a dark color.

good luck!

Solar shades from justshades.com and blinds.com are much cheaper than other custom shops... i'm planning to order some from there soon.

A good friend of mine is a guidance counselor at a high school in Harlem. She is in charge of helping students apply to college who might not otherwise do so, and educate them on their financial aid opportunities. She set up a cause on donorschoose.org to fund SAT prep books and other college reference materials. Please help her cause!

random comment, but I love Bobo - don't wait for a reservation, just go! (but go early). I've gone several times as a walk-in and had lots of luck... it's the perfect spot for an early weekday dinner - go while it's still nice out and sit in the garden and fawn over the beautiful silver tray table. :)

I was a sophomore at the University of Michigan... I was in class when the planes hit, and by the time I heard anything had happened both towers had already fallen. I lived in my sorority house at the time with several girls from New York who were in hysterics because they couldn't reach their relatives. I remember thinking how thankful I was that my family lives in a small town (Blacksburg, VA).

Fast forward five and half years and you can imagine how odd it was on April 16th, 2007 to be crying on a busy street in NYC, for something that happened in that small town...

my mother painted the first floor windowless bathroom in my parents' home a deep spicy orange color that she loves... nobody bothered to tell her the trick about going a bit (or in this case it should have been a LOT) lighter when picking a paint color. It's literally like taking a pee in a pumpkin.

wow, what a bunch of haters... i like this idea! especially since I'd much prefer Target throw down a few pop-up stores every once in a while when they have something cool to offer, rather than bulldoze an entire city block in west Chelsea and open a permanent store. Looking forward to checking it out on Friday.
