Welcome to the New Apartment Therapy!

I am ditching amazon.com! I've found myself too reliant on the Wal-Mart of the internet, and with all of its monopolistic, anti-union, human rights-violating, and eco-wasteful practices, I can't justify my business there anymore. It'll be tough, and require me to search and sometimes spend a bit more, but I'll feel better supporting small and local shops and businesses with a better message.

What's Your 2012 Resolution?
1/5/12 1:18 PM

You'd think a famed chef would have connections. Can you imagine another celeb chef doing this? It's a strange thought.

This actually reinforces my recent decision on one of my New Year's resolutions: to cut back on amazon.com dependency, if not cut it out entirely. They're anti-union and known to mistreat employees, they're the most wasteful shippers in existence, and they're attempting to monopolize book and other sales, rather than promote healthy competition. It's time.

Why Christina Tosi Buys Baking Ingredients on Amazon
12/15/11 1:33 PM

These came out pretty tasty to me and those I shared with. The consistency was impossible to handle pre-baking, so I just sort of scooped heaps of the mix with a spoon and on to a cookie sheet w/parchment paper. Seemed too liquidy, so could've benefited from chilling. But the end result was great: soft and chewy (even after a few days) without being cloyingly sweet.

i have a crazy-organized method using gmail and its labels feature. wrote a post about it here: http://homesomethinghome.wordpress.com/2011/01/28/cookbookery-a-la-gmail/

basically: creating labels for food types (e.g., meats, vegetarian, soups, sweets), then emailing myself a recipe i found online and liked and labeling it so it becomes easily searchable. best part is it's right on my phone for kitchen use when i'm ready to make something. and quick to browse at the farmers market :)

I just hope Klean Kanteen fixed their bottle-leakage issue. I was so excited when I bought one (the polypropylene twist cap), but this thing has ruined many a paper in my bag (and soaked the bag), even when sealed so tight I struggle to open it. :\

do a lot of people have experience with faux fireplaces spontaneously combusting?

i love the look. it's like a "natural" bookshelf--especially great when you don't have room for another piece of furniture. had it in an old apt of mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kicsi_paprika/4020812381/in/set-72157622483647227

These two are my staples and have been big hits at BBQs, both cool and refreshing -- and best of all, cheap and super-easy to prepare.

Arugula and Goat Cheese Pasta Salad http://cookieandkate.com/2011/arugula-and-goat-cheese-pasta-salad/#ixzz1Ke1t5JaD

and

Honey Apple Slaw
4 tbsp. Non-fat Greek Yogurt
1 tbsp. O Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tbsp. O Honey Apple Vinegar
Salt and Pepper to taste
5 c. finely sliced green cabbage (about ½ a head)
1 c. Julienned Fuji apples
½ c. roasted almond or pecan slivers (optional)

In a small bowl whisk together the first 3 ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste.

In a medium bowl combine the finely sliced cabbage & julienned green apples. Just before serving, mix the dressing with the slaw. Sprinkle with the roasted almond or pecan slivers if desired.

Both recipes last several days (and taste better chilled).

you forgot sour cherry soup!

sour cherries in their juices + water + dollop of sour cream + spices (e.g., cinnamon/nutmeg, or sometimes i steep a bag of apple spice tea leaves) + sugar or sweetener. simmer for a few minutes, serve hot or cold. yummmmm.

A huge wheel of Pecorino di Pienza, bought right in Pienza, Italy. Best of all, it was dirt cheap straight from the source. I'm sure I broke some travel rules bringing this back with me, but my dad (and I) enjoyed it for months after. With sliced pears--heaven.

the entire mattress is photoshopped, let alone the pillows. and who knows what else.

regardless, that this contest is completely based around square footage, it sort of behooves entrants to include full square footage ... which in this case should include whatever bathroom (and perhaps kitchen) he shares, no? even if it's shared, it's part of your living space.

I think this matrix method of cooking may actually encourage shy cooks -- those who stick closely to a recipe so as not to "screw up" .. It teaches the basics of a meal type and simplifies the idea of "experimentation" in the kitchen. Bittman's work is great (plus the creatives that helped develop the visual component!). I need a matrix like this for spices and seasonings :)

this is kind of perfect for the apartment i just moved into last week. it's a standing shower only and even narrower than i'd expected--and barely any shelf space, to boot. i'll be trying this out this week!
