white-noise machine! for those of us who can't sleep to singing or talking. i cannot sleep without it (except in the summer when the window a/c does the trick). plenty of smartphone apps offer techie customizable versions (just search "white noise"), and you can pick rain, ocean, train, oscillating fan, and even birds or crickets.

@tspinteriordesign - excellent, eloquent summation. "is it useful, beautiful, valuable or loved?" covers everything, from a re-read novel to a beloved mug.

@IRRY, everything was piled into a tall glass (cup? my memory is vague on the vessel). 2-3 scoops of ice cream, egg slopped in on the side, and cornflakes sprinkled on top. you get sweet and savory, soft and crunchy, hot and cold. so good!!! might have to go make some this week x)

ALSO! If you're adventurous: vanilla or sweet-cream ice cream with cornflakes and a soft-boiled egg. Discovered this magical dessert at hot-springs town Gero in Japan a few years back. Particularly fantastic paired with hot springs on a rainy day (the exact conditions of my experience). Mmm.

I second Barcelona's Boqueria!! Maybe it's because I live here, but I've seen many far more vast and wide-ranging food markets than Union Square's Greenmarket. Granted, I do love having it as an option, not complaining!

just made these for the second time. so easy. and yum. successfully used an immersion blender to mix the butter and dry ingredients. only thing is it needs more salt. tastes a little bland. i'd recommend more than a pinch.

i like the mini-pies in ramekins, which i discovered when my CSA last summer gave me my third straight week of copious blueberries. i keep frozen, pre-made, rolled-up dough (from Trader Joes or elsewhere--rolled up because they don't take up precious space) in the freezer, and tear out what i need to fit the ramekin, with enough extra to fold loosely over. dump in some mixed berries, sprinkle a little sugar and cinnamon, fold over the dough, and pop in the oven for a short wait. yummm. dollop of vanilla bean ice cream is essential, of course.

Can I piggyback on this and ask the same question of frozen whole-leaf herbs? I just froze up a big batch of basil and mint ... Do I move them to the fridge or just thaw on the counter?

I am ditching amazon.com! I've found myself too reliant on the Wal-Mart of the internet, and with all of its monopolistic, anti-union, human rights-violating, and eco-wasteful practices, I can't justify my business there anymore. It'll be tough, and require me to search and sometimes spend a bit more, but I'll feel better supporting small and local shops and businesses with a better message.

What's Your 2012 Resolution?

You'd think a famed chef would have connections. Can you imagine another celeb chef doing this? It's a strange thought.

This actually reinforces my recent decision on one of my New Year's resolutions: to cut back on amazon.com dependency, if not cut it out entirely. They're anti-union and known to mistreat employees, they're the most wasteful shippers in existence, and they're attempting to monopolize book and other sales, rather than promote healthy competition. It's time.

Why Christina Tosi Buys Baking Ingredients on Amazon

These came out pretty tasty to me and those I shared with. The consistency was impossible to handle pre-baking, so I just sort of scooped heaps of the mix with a spoon and on to a cookie sheet w/parchment paper. Seemed too liquidy, so could've benefited from chilling. But the end result was great: soft and chewy (even after a few days) without being cloyingly sweet.
