One more to add: take cues from historical architecture and local venacular. Before homes were outfitted with AC, heating, and other modern amenities they had to adapt to their climate through clever building that took advantage of breezes, etc....Just a thought :)

10 Tips For A Greener Renovation

I think the best wall color choice (brick or not) depends on what you have to decorate with. Case in point: the blue walls look amazing primarily because of the complimentary orange/red hues.

I find the apartment appealing because it seems so natural and inviting. I get bored with overly stylized spaces. And I absolutely adore that patchwork rug!

I use my parent's home as my personal one stop shop for quirky and awesome decor. They are avid antiquers and yard sale fanatics, hence have unusual amounts of one-of-a-kind kitsch. The good thing about their finds is that they were usually cheaply acquired and so repainting or revamping comes with little guilt. The bottom line is, whether it is was expensive or not, do with it what you must to make it work for you!

I'm glad you posted learp17. I've always had a hankering to install real terra cotta tiles, but had no idea they collected grime the way you indicated. Now I know and I'll be sure to install in a low traffic area. Thanks~

Love the idea hate the price. That being said, this looks like it would be ridiculoulsy easy to replicate oneself.

It would be helpful to know what the wall color is for the room in which it will be placed. Without knowing that I second your idea for navy blue although I would opt for a pattern or print, maybe even some type of crewel work fabric? Also, some patterned print bolster pillows on either end of the couch would soften its hard lines but still work with the style.
Good luck!

Is there a common color amongst your decorating accessories? I would start by going through the items you already have and looking for one dominant color. Then I would pick a complimentary color for my walls. If you have lots of red, then pale aqua walls would look nice. If you have lots of yellow, the right gray would look sophisticated (and so on.) Since your budget is tight (I can relate), this might be the best way to showcase what you already have and make the space fit you (not the other way around).
Good luck!

Color Combo: Turquoise, Red, and White | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles

I guess you either love them or hate them. We're adding a simple ceramic one to our half bath downstairs that gets infrequent use. I don't want a bulky vanity and don't need undercounter storage so a vessel sink is perfect for our need. I could care less about being trendy; I'm looking for function and ease of install.

The first color I thought of was a dark green. I know that is a super traditional color combo with the dark cabinets, but just the right shade would it make it look rich and warm. I would also change out the cabinet pulls to a long sleek handle to add a more sophisticated element. Some type of window treatment (maybe a roman shade?) would help.
It seems you already have undercounter lighting in one spot. How about adding it to all the upper cabinets? Maybe its just the photo, but a lower wattage would make it look less institutional.
Also, I think a glass tile backsplash would look amazing in this kitchen.
Good luck!

Decorating Inspiration for a Blah Kitchen? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy New York

I have just a few more recommendations to add to what the editor suggested. Why not add a simple and relatively affordable backsplash using stainless steel adhesive tiles? They are very easy to apply and cut to size and will provide a more current element to your kitchen. I would also "cap" the open space above your top cabinets. Using it as storage makes the kitchen looks cluttered and its not tall enough to use as a display area. Just use molding, decorative or plain, to cover up this void. Finally, I recommend replacing your hood vent and microwave. They seem to have yellowed and really distract your eye from the rest of the room.
Good luck!

I'm assuming you have a pedestal sink, even though I can't tell in the photo. Why not make a simple skirt for the sink in a bright colored fabric? This will give a pop of color to the room without having to go through the process of paint approval and allow you to gain some storage space.
For the window I would add a simple fabric roman shade in color(s) that compliments the skirt, but in a contrasting pattern or even a solid. I would put up a sheer or neatural shower curtain so as to not hide that awesome tub or block the light from the window.
Also, I think RosieGreenie's idea of adding succulents is a great idea to breathe a little life into the space.

Good luck!

Advice for This Bare Rental Bathroom? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy New York
3/11/10 9:30 AM

The bathroom really isn't that bad compared to others from that era. I definitely agree with painting the walls a charcoal gray color. I would also put up crown molding (very easy to get from any home improvement store and easy to install with a miter saw and nail gun). If you do the crown, I would also suggest painting the ceiling 2-3 shades lighter gray for real drama. Others suggestions include:
* replacing the current mirror/medicine cabinet with a framed mirror
* Replace the dated light fixture
* Get plantation shutters for the bathroom window
* Raise the shower curtain rod to the ceiling to make the room feel bigger and higher
* Get a runner for the bathroom that picks up all the colors in the room

Also, does the tile extend under the current vanity? If so, tear out the vanity, clean the tile and replace with one that is slimmer and has legs to reduce the clunky feel.

Good luck!

Ideas for Bathroom Renovation? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy San Francisco

The walls and trim are already passive colors so I recommend painting the banister and rails black not white for a more dramatic pop. I completely agree that an interesting, dangly chandelier would do wonders for this space. Here are some other (inexpensive) suggestions:

* Change out your white outlet covers to brushed nickel ones
* Replace your brass door knobs with brushed nickel/glass ones
* Remove the closet doors by the front entrance and hang drapes in an intersting black/white fabric instead. This will add element of visual interest and break up the monotony of doors.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing what you do!
