Listen everyone - though this recommendation only came out this week - if you've read any books, magazine articles or online articles by reputable sources, you would ALREADY know that bumpers are not so cool for your baby.

Why are you all up in arms all of a sudden?

Yes, bumpers have now been proven by yet ANOTHER review of existing studies to be unsafe. Case closed - they're not really all that safe. Do you choose to use them? That's up to you.

As a parent, you have to make a lot of choices about safety - cushy bumpers are probably not worth it.

Personally, my baby kept on sticking arms and legs (even with a sleepsack) out of her crib in harm's way (we have to walk by her to get out of our tiny NYC apt and her crib is next to our bedroom door). The crying when she got her arms and legs stuck and being trapped in her sleepsack was also not good. We got breathable bumpers which we pushed as low as we could (so just as much of the bumper was necessary was over the matress) - things have been fine.

Do I feel like this is 100% the safest thing to be doing? No - but you have to think about your choices and do what you have to do to be a good parent.

Listen guys - the jungle gym at the playground is also very dangerous if the child falls from the top - but you all probably let them climb it anyhow.

I do it this way too - really the trick is to NOT hold the avocado when you do this. You don't need to. Place it on the counter and gently whack it with your chef's knife as directed. This method holds no dangers.

Don't get too cocky either - because I unthinkingly decided to do this with the tip of a paring knife once and landed in the emergency room with a hole in the middle of my hand. They told me that this is one of the most common injuries they get in the emergency room in NYC. Really dangerous too - as you could sever nerves in your hand.

A lot of these tips sound very similar to uses for Baking Soda - what's the difference. Does Borax work like baking soda because they are both basic in PH? Does anyone know? Which is better?

Cubbieblue854 - as a vinyl lover myself, please check with the boyfriend first about stuff like bowls made of old vinyl - he may not like it! It breaks my heart to see those old LP's destroyed to make disposable decor that's fun for like 2 minutes. Same for clocks, coasters, etc.,...

Do you live in one of the co-op village apt's in the LES? My bathroom tile is EXACTLY the same as yours and I've been wondering what to do about it too!

Another issue I have is that years of paint over paint over paint have made the walls disgustingly gunky. That's another issue if you're going to paint the walls....you'll probably have to remove some of the layers of paint and do some prep to get a good paint job....

This dish is also a staple Cantonese dish. In Cantonese home cooking, its usually a bit soupier...also, sometimes some ginger is thrown in before the tomatoes are added. Yum - just reminded me I hadn't made it in a while....

Aulaire - if shoes lined up in your ancient Japanese garden look so fantastic - are you saying that Asian people who live in modern apartment buildings are doing aesthetic no-no's when they take this custom to their modern everyday lives?

It's not really wallpaper/contact paper - once it dries, it's completely like paint - so you can paint over it. It's more like a paint that goes on like wallpaper. And you can't see the seams either - hard to believe, but true. I used it on a wall on my apt. and it was great. The only thing is the "faux" finishes aren't that cool - but that's for you to decide I guess...

While Aulaire does have a point - about neatness...

At least for Asian & other folks who take off their shoes when they enter houses - a shoe storage solution next to the door makes a lot of sense. It's a pain to have to drag your shoes off to the closet as soon as you get in the door - and multiply that by multiple family members - you get a mess unless you organize by the door.

I think this is a great solution.

I have a recipe from back of Bisquick for Chicken pot pie that is sooo easy, slightly unhealthy (it involves Campbells soup too) - but LOVED by everyone. Easy peasy.

Well - if I'm not mistaken from watching that show, it's based in the Bay Area, CA.

Growing up in CA - they always tell you not to hang items - especially large and heavy items like mirrors - over your head or near your head....obviously because of earthquake issues...

So I like it fine - and it's safe!

I have read on other sites that talcum powder set down as a barrier works too. I have yet to try it, but my hopes are high.

I think that the various solutions listed here may work for some and not for others because we're dealing with different types of ants. Does anyone know of a good site that shows you how to identify your ants?

I have to say - living on the 12th floor of an apt. makes it harder to control since you don't have access to the ground floor....

Wow! I live in NY - but originally am from San Jose. I am really surprised that 300 sq. foot studios actually exist in San Jose! When I was there, single family homes or condos were the norm.

What kind of building is this Andrew? Is it a cut down industrial space?

BTW - great job!

Oh!!! I thought I was the only one looking for a vintage chesterfield like the one in the 1st picture! I've been looking everywhere, can't find a good one for a reasonable price. Good luck Kristian - hope you've succeeded where I haven't!

Jamie Oliver was one of the large selection of chefs featured on Food Network when it launched. I was hooked on the Food Network then and tried recipes from every single one of their chefs: Alton, Ming, Emiril (ugh!), Sarah Moulton...and of course the Naked Chef. The others had recipes that were real duds a lot of the time, but *all* of the recipes that I tried to re-create from Jamie Oliver have come out delicious and tasty. I think it's because his premise is that he makes cooking easy and that if you put in a little effort, even a non-cooking idiot can make good, healthy (meaning not packaged) food. And he's right. I have to admit - I found him annoying at first, but he grows on you with his genuine ability to help you cook better!

To those of you who don't think that white fish floating upside down at the top is sick or already dead - do you really think that healthy goldfish like to hang out floating upside down? It means something is seriously wrong with that fish.

I've used it too - here in NY. Agreed - it is *a lot* of work - and kind of pricey. It cost us about $750 for the sanded primer and enough plaster for 2 layers of the american clay.

I love it, for the look and environmental qualities (it has an ionic charge that repels dirt), but I repeat, it is a lot of work and a big committment if you do it yourself. My husband and I worked for 2 whole days morning through late night and every night after work for 5 days after that to do a 12 X15 room. But this could be because we are amateurs.

Beware although you need to roll on the primer and trowel on 2 layers of the clay, if you want a smooth finish, you need to burnish too which is like troweling again, but with more work.

It's great - but just know what you're getting into!

Is it also used in stews, soups? It sounds good.

Word of Mouth: Chermoula
6/19/07 7:12 AM

My landlord has been good (not great) about dealing with this issue - spraying the building etc., but he has complained that this is a problem because many of our neighbors do NOT participate in the exterminations (not moving their furniture away from walls etc.,) so there is only so much they can do by spraying *around* things.

Most recently, they have a new program with the exterminators where they have gone through my apt. (and my neighbors) and drilled numerous holes (3 or 4 per room) and injected or sprayed something into the walls to try to eradicate this problem.

Has anyone heard of this "drilling hole" technique? Is it any more effective? How does it work?

Thanks!
