enchiladas and rice! my favorite recipes are these:

last time, i made a double batch of both and then froze individual containers with two enchiladas and some rice. i bet they'd be just as delicious without the chicken.

i'm fairly certain i could start an entire blog with all of my food quirks and oddities. part of the reason why i learned how to cook is because i'm so particular with how the majority of the foods i eat are prepared it's just easier to cook it myself. the worst part is they are often contradictory, which is probably why my exasperated father has given up trying to remember all of them. (like... not eating any meat off of the bone, except for when i steal the wings off of a freshly roasted chicken; hating onions, yet loving leeks and shallots; refusing to eat mashed potatoes with the skins in them or the skin from a baked potato, but i love potato skins with cheese and bacon...i could go on forever).

however, my all time weirdest habit that i can think of also has to do with pancake syrup. if i go to IHOP and get more than one pancake, i have to get a separate plate and eat each pancake separately, with a different syrup, wiping off all traces of the previous syrup from the plate and utensils before moving on to the next pancake. no syrup mixing!

i have been searching the internet fervently for awhile now to find a good homemade toaster strudel recipe, due to the nasty ingredients in the boxed kind. ah, this just made my day.

i had no idea water ice was regional, although i did know people not from philly/jersey call it italian ice.

free rita's water ice on the first day of spring has to be one of my favorite traditions. the rest of the country is missing out!

i usually just drizzle extra virgin olive oil and grate some parmesan or reggiano over top. simple. easy. wonderful.

not to sound like a broken record, but there's a good reason dogfish head is being recommended - it's amazing. my favorites are the aprihop (spring seasonal) and punkin ale (fall seasonal). i'll also echo the recommendations for magic hat #9. i'm also a big fan of leinenkugel's sunset wheat, i always tell people it "tastes like fruity pebbles" and i can't think of a more grown-up way to describe it, unfortunately. then again, after typing my recommendations, i guess i'll drink anything with fruit in it!

as for non-fruity... lancaster brewing company also makes a great milk stout, and if you can find flying fish around you i definitely recommend it. it's brewed in new jersey, not sure what kind of distribution it gets.

if i'm buying something because it's supposed to be healthy, then i like the ingredient list to reflect that. i've also been using ingredient lists to teach my mother a bit more about nutrition - the other day we were grocery shopping and she saw a new product, a flavored lemonade. i told her if the first two ingredients were water and high fructose corn syrup it was junk and to put it back - and i was right. i ended up steering her towards a 100% juice instead. i explained that there were still calories and sugar, but it was a better treat.

other than that, my biggest rule is that if i'm buying a frozen entree, the chicken can't have an ingredient list - which pretty much disqualifies most frozen entrees containing chicken.

my boyfriend is allergic to tilapia, so restaurants are the only place i'll eat it. i also don't think it's worth the effort to make sushi at home, restaurants will have much fresher fish than i could affordably get. i've also never attempted homemade dumplings, but i will buy those frozen.

as for what i won't order out? pretty much any italian food. my father used to own an italian restaurant so pretty much everything else pales in comparison. i also hate french toast that isn't my own, and scrambled eggs that aren't my own.
