The light in your apartment is lovely. I adore that green stool! Where is it from?

I don't see dreary at all! This space has style but also feels home-y and loved (a feeling that is sometimes lacking on this site!). Aside from the, er, logistics of a twin bed in a closet ;) I would love to be in this apartment!

What about a daybed? I wonder if you could find a full-sized one (big enough for sleeping!) and have it face out into the living space. It would expand your daytime or social space into nearly the whole room.

I realize that Americans have more bathrooms than ever before--but this design would be impractical for a busy household, or an expanding household with small children. I grew up as one of 3 kids sharing 1 bathroom and I can't tell you how many times it was "can I just brush my teeth" or "I need to grab my comb" etc when someone was in the shower on a busy morning getting ready for whatever.Thank goodness for heavy shower curtains!

With this design, that sort of space-sharing is impossible.

the editors at this site know how to give their audience what they want!

I am in awe of that bike storage! Is it a hack, or did you purchase a kit somewhere? please share!

Also, I understand you might have tidied for the picture...don't your bikes drip on the floor/furniture nearby? do you have a rug or a cleaning system?

I agree with the recommendation to take it slow and find what works for YOU.

The thing that strikes me in the photo is that the sofa and chair and the walls are all the same color. The visual expanse of tan might be part of why your accents (the pillows, boxes, etc) jump out "too much". Can you paint the walls? Or hang more art/framed wall paper etc to help separate wall from couch? Or slipcover the furniture?

I would maybe switch out the silver lamp, if you have a darker lamp elsewhere that matches the table/couch feet. Maybe moving that little square end table into the dead space in the corner, then you could put a dark table lamp on it, some flowers, show off that brown vase more.

good luck! congrats on the condo! I hope you have fun making it your own.

Maybe this is a generation gap or having traveled to the 3rd world or a poor mid-20's thing but I strongly agree with William in the 22 and jrochest. If someone offers to put you up FOR FREE smile and roll with whatever they have to offer. Cultivate some gratitude! They have opened their home to you, however humble or grand.

Yes, it is important to be a welcoming, generous and thoughtful host, however you are able to do that. But no one should expect hotel treatment, or feel it is expected of them by their guests.
