first thought that ran through my head after seeing the first/last name and the picture of the table was, 'i wonder if she's related to george nakashima'. so yes, it's an appropriate reference.

my house ain't no damn museum. my home with my photos of my loved ones. photos of the people you care about should serve as a reminder of what makes your home and your life unique.

i would keep them the same. it will make the space seem larger and won't detract from the gorgeous historic/wood details.

my wife and i are always at odds with the wood paneling in our eichler. we have about three walls left in the house that have the original paneling. she wants to either paint them or do some wallpaper, and i'd rather keep them original. i think it keeps the character and integrity of the eichler...but i might lose the battle in a couple more years.

kids definitely change the furnishing situation. instead of glass, sharp lines, and items that are easy to fall, we opted more for wood and rounded lines, stable and sturdy. for our sofa, we found a vintage piece that needed to be reupholstered. having kids, we upholstered in a cheap, durable (but not-luxurious) linen with the thought that we'd get it redone (again) after the kids grow up in a more expensive fabric.

beautiful. as others have applauded, the mix of light and dark, craftsman era and modern is always difficult to make work, and you've done it exceedingly well. dig the keyes piece.

@ chowbaby - you are correct. The original Eichler doors are manual horizontal sliders, which is why I was thinking it was possible as a DIY.

My magazine subscription (not including my wife's) has whittled down from twelve to five. While some subscriptions were simply lost to untimely deaths (gourmet, domino), others were fallouts from the internet (juxtapoz, dwell). That being said, I will always subscribe to magazines, but perhaps to a lesser degree. The permanence and tangibility of magazines are unmatched, but the timeliness and abundance of information on the web is slowly killing the industry.

I do love the power of print campaign, but in my case, it's just preaching to the choir.

Can all the gender police please go away? If the Inside Man section bothers you so much, simply stop reading any time you see the header and go pen your thesis on neo-feminism or your short story about an asexual utopian world.

All that aside, I'm a fan of the masculine-leaning design. Keep it coming. Haters, hate on.

tacky. the point of a housewarming is to warm the house and welcome your friends/family into your new home, not receive gifts. if anyone asks, i tell them, 'just bring some booze to keep the party going'.
