My grandma's house had saloon doors into the kitchen, a mail slot directly through the front wall into the closet, a laundry chute, a trash compactor, a pool, and an attic bedroom with red shag carpeting and cowhide bedcovers (why yes, my dad and uncle did get to decorate by themselves in high school). I thought all of this was amazing.

In friends' houses, I was pretty impressed by video games, intercom systems, waterbeds, walk-out basements, trampolines, yards with trees, jack-and-jill bedrooms, and kitchen cabinets always stocked with junk food.

Uh, Laura110, the p-trap is there to prevent sewer gases from backing up into your house. And they only work when they're full of water. Not really the best idea to detach them.

Very nice! I especially like the light shelf, the tall vertical window on the back, and the carport/pool combo. I too would like to see more pictures, including the before shots.

I don't have a dishwasher, my kitchen is tiny, and I despise washing dishes. This is one of the main reasons I rarely cook. I would like to cook more but just can't handle the thought of all the resultant dirty dishes.

Oh I love that Pierre Frey fabric. Every time I see it I want it even more, even though my apartment definitely isn't glam enough to pull it off.

I love these, too. The sections of color are in good proportion to the rest of the piece, and painted with a straight edge, so I don't think it looks unfinished at all.

Wow, that's gorgeous. Almost makes me want to learn how to cook...

I'm really enjoying all the I Saloni posts, but what's with the miniature setting/tilt-shift effect used on all the photos? I feel like I'm looking at dollhouse furniture.

You live in my favorite city in my dream apartment. I'm so jealous I could cry!

Ok, I need to know where you live and if there are any empty units in your building. Like now. Before I have to go home to my own dreary apartment without gorgeous casements.

Definitely two thumbs up!

I pay $735 for a well-kept but no frills 1-bedroom in a safe neighborhood in Chicago. I could go up to $1100 if my student loan payments magically disappeared. I wouldn't pay any lower because I don't want a studio, a roommate, or to live in a worse neighborhood.

Doesn't your architect have resources for residential elevators? We're designing one now for a retired couple and you can finish the interior of the cab pretty much any way you want. With residential elevators, there are two doors, one for the cab and one into the hall. The one in the hall you can also finish to look like every other door in the house. I'm not sure of companies that sell in Greece, but here are some links to give you ideas.

(this is a European company, so you might have luck here)

As to the location, you want it where it will be easy to use or there is no point. It may look prominent in plan, but built it will just look like any other wall with a closet door at each floor.

As to maintenance, single-family elevators are going to be different than commercial elevators used in apartments and condos. Hydraulic ones still need daily operation, but maybe look into an inline gear drive elevator?

Very very clever! I wish there was something painted on the wall under the table. That way you have something to look at while you're eating.

@lepidoptery
People say 'mason-airy'. All the time. Especially masons and masonry contractors. I've even seen it spelled wrong as 'masonary' on a masonry contractor's business card.

@ lbro
re: clerestory-- The first syllable may very well vary with different accents, but I know for sure it's not clair-UH-story, which is what I originally thought it was :)

I think clerestory is actually pronounced 'clear story', at least in the U.S. It's mispronounced nearly as often as masonry.

Anyone know of a good carry-on for tall people? I'm 6' and every wheeled carry-on I've had bashes into the backs of my heels when I walk because the handle is too short.

Reading all these comments makes me realize I've never lived anywhere with clean enough air to dry my clothes outside, which is really gross. I should probably get myself checked out for black lung or something...I would blame it on city living, but the suburb I grew up in must have been downwind of some large farm or factory. Just going outside for a few minutes would result in this disgusting smell clinging to you- I can't imagine drying my clothes in it!

Of course, it's also 11degrees Fahrenheit here today, so not great line-drying weather anyway.

Sassy C- I read about that recently. Apparently the current American way of holding and using a fork is also the original European way. Colonists brought this style over to North America and kept it, while Europeans gradually stopped switching the knife and fork between hands.

Anna- great article! I love these history pieces you guys do- please keep them up!

I suppose I can get used to now having to check three tabs- style, diy, and homekeeping- instead of just one main page, but the overlap is pretty disconcerting. I also don't mind folding in the tech and re-nest posts into everything else, even though I don't usually read those. However, I think it was a really bad idea to fold in the kid stuff into the other categories. People either have young kids or they don't. If they do, they can go to the family section. I don't have kids, don't intend to have kids, so personally find the inclusion of kid stuff into the other categories super annoying.

I do, however, like the cleaner look and new colors, and have no opinion on the fonts :)

I really like the archive credenza at cb2. Not exactly a campaign chest, but has a similar aesthetic.
