Kitchen Accidents: What Lessons Have You Learned?

I have a SEVEN A.M. party to attend tomorrow, and I'm bringing Smitten Kitchen's Irish CarBomb Cupcakes, as well as some banana bread. The idea is to eat breakfast and have a few before heading out to watch them dye the Chicago River a stranger shade of green.

What's Cooking This Weekend?
Weekend of March 12-13, 2011

I'm making soup and bread for a crowd. It started with an invitation to four people, then they invited people, then the husband invited people...

I tried to make no-knead bread but it didn't rise over night (first time this has happened to me- possibly wrong or dead yeast). So I made my first attempt at normal rolls and now my kitchen is a yeasty floury doughy disaster scene. Plus my whole apartment looks like a bomb went off.

I'll be huddled in the corner crying if anyone needs me.

I have been waiting to make this until the temperature dropped. I woke up this morning and knew it was time!

It's in the fridge now, chilling till it's ready for desert tonight. I'm serving it after stuffed acorn squash with wild rice, mushrooms and sausage. SO EXCITED!

One of the best lessons mom taught me is that food is done when it looks like food.

"How do I know when this artichoke is done?" "When it looks like an artichoke."

"When do you think the pizza will be done?"
"When it looks like a pizza."

"Is the pie crust done yet?"
"I don't know, does it look like a pie?"

This has translated well into my household, and it's my standard answer when the husband asks if something is done or how to tell when it's done. Obviously you can't tell this from across the room or from good timing, but it's a pretty good rule.
