Check out JoMar's in North Philly, but stop in regularly on the same day over a couple of weeks -- they often have a really good selection of upholstery-weight fabrics, but it depends on what their suppliers send them. I agree that it looks like a crochet hook. My family's brownstone in Park Slope, Brooklyn was also built at the turn of the last century. When my parents remodelled in 1963, opening the chimney revealed a stash of Long Island Railrood timetables (the Atlantic Avenue station is just 1/4 mile away) from 1907. People were going to the Hamptons, even then! I think they had to take a ferry from the foot of Atlantic Avenue for part of the way, tho. I suggest you contact Harry Zarin fabrics, maybe forward them this article; they have a huge decorating fabric store on the lower East Side here in Manhattan. numbskull, this is a Brooklyn princess speaking. It's a terrific opportunity to make them feel sorry for you and take you shopping. And/or even a $50 Target gift card would help. In the meantime, borrow two folding chairs from a pal and an inflatable mattress or sleeping bag (for you.) Make sure the bed is nicely made with clean sheets, put out a $3 bunch of flowers, and at least make sure you have some milk and instant coffee for the morning. You can find worm castings at the Union Square Greenmarket (sold by an East Village Co-op) on Saturdays at least and, I think on Wed. as well. I think they also sell compost, both at low prices. I work at a college in upper Manhattan, and some of faculty recommended this place to me; they've been maintaining my sewing machines for years (the last time I had an overhaul it was $75, but that was two years ago.) They're at Broadway and 108th St., right near the #1 train. Not an inexpensive store, but you get what you pay for every time -- and their staff are marvelous. They're used to dealing with fashion students, so they don't laugh if you blanche at prices -- and you may wind up deciding the investment is worth all your effort. Very different from Mendel Fabrics on Hester St., possibly the most hostile shopping environment I've every experienced. Is it the idea of putting a sheet of glass in back of the stove or sink as a backsplash, so the wall doesn't get icky? My great-aunt did that a long time ago, but with a sheet of oilcloth on the wall. I like this better -- I just need to know what to bind the glass sheet's edges with.
