I used to leave the screen door to my balcony open (more air flow that way). On one of these open-screen-door days a particularly brash squirrel came in and made a beeline for my pantry, where I found it attacking a bag of peanuts. The threw a bedroom slipper into the pantry -- not to hit the squirrel, just to startle it -- and it went bolting back outside. So that is my cautionary tale: screens are not just for blocking out the mosquitoes!

Sooner or later the flowers will drop off; it doesn't mean you have a brown thumb. Only fake flowers last forever :-)
Usually moth orchids ("phals") have one big spree of blooming a year right starting in December. After all those blossoms drop off then the plant needs to rest for a couple months.
As for watering: feel the moss or bark it's potted in. Ideally it should be almost dry when you water it. Ideally it should not be bone dry between waterings, but underwatering is almost always better than overwatering.

Just hang ornaments on big houseplant. It always gets a laugh. I have a big jade plant I put lights and ornaments on every year in lieu of a "proper" Christmas tree...people love it.
