Lenje - I thought the same thing about the bathroom. Overall, it is a neat plan and while too small for me, I can see it working for others. I thought the "mistakes" were really interesting and I appreciated them being shared with us.

Do not tell me how to eat, or else. Someone once commented on my mopping in Rome, of all places & I very nearly stabbed him to death. If the food is lovely enough to warrant sopping, by all means sop away. And everyone can go to hell.

I can't believe I missed this! I make ramen at least once a week, roughly based on what you'd get at a shop in Japan. Boil dried shitakes, frozen turnip or collard greens, root veg like turnips or spicy radishes, scallions, sometimes, when especially broke I throw in frozen lima beans. Throw in a dried chili pepper or two for heat. Mix some miso with hot water on the side, cook ramen separately then rinse before adding to pot. Stir in miso & deliciousness is ready. Another great option is curry miso ramen, where you add some curry powder to the broth before cooking. Even if you've just got instand ramen & a tub of miso, still elevates the dish to something so much more satisfying. (Always toss the packet).

I work in a pharmacy where we are not allowed to sit. My shifts vary in length from 6- 11 hrs. I often spend ~30 minutes at a pop standing still at a computer, before running around doing other work for another 30. After a few years of this, my lower-back muscles constantly hurt, my legs are tight. I used to be more active, went to the gym, practiced yoga. This change is probably equal parts getting older- hating the low wage job the economy steered me into- and wishing that I could sit for a few minutes during the day (we don't get breaks either, except a 30 minute lunch).

That utilitarian comfort thing also makes a space "home" rather than showpiece, I think. It reveals an intimacy with a space. Or maybe I am just trying to justify the multitude of jerry riggings in our current cottage.

A few months back, I put on a big pot of lentils. Hubs & I went for a walk, which turned into a jog when I realized that the stove was still on high, about an hour later. Ruined the nice pot my mother gave me. She had it for 30 years, I ruined it in 3 months.

Another time, hubs was preheating the oven. I smelled something yummy & strange. Opened it to find a six pack of beer in plastic bag melting on the top shelf. No idea.

As said above, only on a v. high ceiling. A friend did her room in lavender & the ceiling in a paler lavender - it rocked.

I disagree. I have zero problem with "ladies" or "girls" just like I don't mind being included in "guys" or "y'all." It's an interior design website, we needn't be so formal.

I spent a season working in Yosemite. At the end I was moving to Chattanooga. Lost my wallet in the Vegas airport in the way there. Stayed with friends for a few days in TN until I found a place, but since I had no id (other than passport), no atm card or credit cards, the rental company insisted on me paying something like 4 months rent in advance within 2 weeks or I'd loose deposit & 1st month's rent. In the end I couldn't afford it & told them I'd be leaving (they had made a mistake in writing the lease which let me off the hook). Months later, I received a letter from a law firm insisting that I pay about 2 more months rent immediately. In the end, I paid somewhere near 4 months rent for the week I stayed there.

I studied in Osaka for a year & found a beautiful wooden vanity in the trash. Had to put it back in the trash, sadly.

Years later, I was working near Tokyo and had a wonderful antique dresser (not sure if it was Japanese or Korean) made of a light, soft wood with lovely drawer pulls. I gave it to a second hand shop. Is it weird to miss inanimate objects 8 years down the line? (I've also tossed / given away a lot of pottery)

When I was in college the closest Ikea was about 600 miles away & on the way to my parents house. Every road trip home involved a stop & I can honestly say that every visit ended with me crying because whatever life changing piece of furniture I had fallen in love with would not fit in the trunk. Nowadays, we go maybe once every 2 years or so? If we need to replace the piece that fell apart after frequent moves or not using coasters (I'm looking at you, desk). There's one about an hour away now, but we never seem to have the 4 hours (or cash) that trip would take.

Pretty neat idea! I rent & am not allowed to have a bin, but can have a garden.

Curries! Thai & Japanese, mainly. Dinner & lunch in one go. Or homemade pasta sauce (onions, garlic, eggplant or peppers or whatever & overripe tomatoes) & pasta. Several times a week for years. Enough variety in the spices & ingredients to keep it fresh.

Absolutely brilliant. I'd put one in my house, if I owned one.

Or patronize that ill, favorite aunt- the local video store. I have to plug, my husband works at an adorable, locally owned, nearly failing one. Three parts nostalgia + one part college students who didn't plan ahead.
