i don't know about using that thing as a dryer rack, but it'd be a sweet mobile for a baby's room (with family photos, postcards of happy places, or just neat graphic cards hanging) or as a cool hanging fixture in a casual adult's space with paper clipped in each one. maybe even hanging over a desk instead of a cork board on the wall. I had a column just like that in the loft I recently moved out of, and while I also initially found it frustrating, I ended up loving it and making it the border for an office nook. I'd put a desk (is that a desk on the far left in the photo?) against the wall so that if you're sitting at the desk, your back is to the column. And your living space looks large and open enough that you could rearrange to fit your dining table elsewhere. It'll just take some trying different arrangements, but I think that is the best thing to do with a column like that when it naturally divides the space. Working Around a Concrete Column? I bought mine from Ikea and (this is a side-tracking question) they are leaning forward out of the wall as though they're going to fall right out, breaking everything on them in the process. My boyfriend helped me install them and is really good at these things, so I feel confident he did the job correctly and well. And they are supposed to hold up to 80 pounds and I believe I have maybe 40 pounds at MOST on them. Does anyone else have this trouble? Any solutions? I'm planning to buy some brackets even though the reason I bought the lack shelves is that there is no visible hardware. Sources for Wood Floating Shelves? Patrick, what do the Madeline Weinrib cotton rugs run? I love them but also always assume I can't even come close to affording her stuff. And is the quality of the cotton really wonderful? (I assume yes, but just want to ask.) More Affordable Zig Zag Rug?Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Chicago |

The quality on the West Elm one is really poor anyway (just in case you decide that you are indeed tempted by that one). From the two West Elm wool rugs I've bought, I'm learning that a really good quality wool rug that doesn't look cheap is hard to come by. i think that louis xiii's response (he's the subject of the original post) is endearingly sweet, good-natured, and kind. sounds like he's a great dude to me, and whatever girlfriend comes along will appreciate his perspective on wanting things to be clean and organized, but also having other things to do in life -- that sounds pretty sane and balanced to me. (so this is to say that i'm glad that he chimed in and spoke for himself!) and sounds to me like the original author of the post meant to raise a relevant question with good intentions; after all, she is a writer on a lifestyle blog about apartments and homes. if she's good buddies with the dude these are probably things she might've light-heartedly ribbed him about over a beer or something anyway.
