Gaiam sells the Windstream Human Power Generator, which turns a regular bike into a generator. I've never used it, but it looks like it does the job. There's a lot more info at Windstream Power's site (http://www.windstreampower.com/).

If your desk is up against the wall, wouldn't this printer push your desk out a few inches? And would being against the wall cause heat dissipation problems? If your desk isn't against the wall, doesn't this make it really easy for people to bump into the printer?

Also, because there's no paper tray, don't you have to clear out the space in front of it to make room for the paper as it comes out? It doesn't look like it's saving that much space then.

Pretty good solution to the problem of having a USB hub with a cord that's too long. My only question is, does anyone know how long that cord will hold up with all that whirling?

This has all the advantages and disadvantages that multiple function devices have. On the plus side, you only need one item not two, which saves on materials and space, if those are considerations for you. On the minus side if it ever goes missing or breaks, you've now lost the functionality of both of its two parts.

I saw the M2E Power representative at Greener Gadgets on Friday. It sounds pretty exciting. If I heard the numbers right, just carrying around your cell phone and walking for 1-2 hours will get you 1/2 hour to an hour of talk time.

I don't know if calling them "notably bad" products is entirely fair. Many of these were actually quite good from a technological standpoint, but failed simply from a business standpoint.

The Newton, for instance, was great technologically. Not without its flaws, of course, but still an amazing device.

The "puck" mouse was actually preferred by some people, especially those with smaller hands.

The Cube was actually a great small form factor computer, and it's still sought after by fans. It's main flaw was that it was overpriced.

Also worth checking out is GreenDisk. They sell recycled CD jewel cases.

I actually can't remember the last time I was given the choice. Every place I go to just uses plastic.

Whenever I plan to go out shopping, I bring reusable bags. When I go shopping on the spur of the moment, and I don't have one with me, I try to just pick up a few items and use no bag at all.

But as to which one is better if you had to choose, the debate on EcoGeek brought up some good points. While plastic does use less energy up front, it's not a renewable resource. And paper easily biodegrades at the end of its useful life.

Has anyone done a study on bioplastics, such as those made from corn? How does it compare to paper and plastic in the energy used to make and ship, how well does it biodegrade, etc?

I have a laptop that was made in 2000, and a cell phone that was made in 2001. The laptop has gotten a few upgrades, and the cell phone some repairs, but they both still work. I try to use things for as long possible. I then try to see if someone else can use it, or if not, recycle it.

You do end up saving money. You also get the satisfaction of knowing that you're not needlessly contributing to a disposable culture. Sometimes my computer is a little slow. There are some things my phone can't do. But nothing rises to the level of a good reason to dispose of an otherwise perfectly good piece of equipment.

I think reframing the question is also important. Why do you buy something right away?

I second the vote for MacFixItForums . I can't remember the last time I went there and didn't get a problem solved.

For general info, commentary, and news try MacInTouch.

For Macintosh rumors, I like ThinkSecret. There are other sites with more rumors, but none that I can find with more accurate rumors.
