I don't even have room on my kitchen counters for a coffee pot, so an appliance devoted to hot dogs? out of the question. Hot or Not?: Hot Diggity Dogger |

Oh no, this isn't an official entry. I still adore it though. This guy doesn't even need a DWR gift certificate with his interesting design, unique style and crazy street finds! Small Cool Extra: Kirk's Amazing Memory |

I actually love all the white and find it very serene. It lets the piano take center stage and I can imagine sitting there and playing and enjoying the great view. #21 - Debbie's Baby Grand |

I think you've done a nice job of creating separate areas but keeping an open feeling. Like Alex, I'd also be inclined to leave the railing off. Unless you are planning on doing lots of drunk music-making (not a negative thing, by any means!) I would just skip the railing to keep things open. I like Maxwell's idea of a step structure with spring loaded casters. That way if you rearranged the loft area and wanted the stairs on the other end you could move them, or if you had a party and needed that area open you could push the stairs out of the way. The article mentioned above names cities where renting is often advantageous. I have been shocked to see what I could afford if I lived somewhere else. What I pay for a 1-bedroom flat could buy a 4-bedroom house with a nice yard in Omaha. Renting isn't better than buying across the board, but it can definitely save you lots of money in a number of cities. To Rent or To Buy? |

Pelicolina, I don't see where this calc factors in the tax deduction. It would be nice if it did for accuracy, but with the tax bracket I am in and the cost of our home the potential tax deduction barely makes a dent in the increased expenses of buying versus renting in our area. The tax breaks of home-ownership are often grossly misrepresented to potential buyers as a selling point. To Rent or To Buy? |

mjoe - I hate ticking too. I've had to get rid of more than one clock because of it being too noisy. The worst is when I am having a hard time sleeping and can hear a clock in a neighboring room ticking away the precious sleep I am missing! Hot or Not? |

Very nice layout. You can definitely tell this a guy's place (not that that is a bad thing, I'd be thrilled if most guy's homes looked this clean and pulled together!) # 1 - Joe's Custom-Made Loft |

Joel - thanks for doing that math. It is certainly an interesting thing to consider. $578 sounds cheap but when you think about all that it could buy back in 1956 that is a different story. Good Questions: Should I Spring For a Knockoff? |

nelsorp - I find the elitist attitude associated with modern furniture and design to be disturbing to. Maybe I'm just a goof - but I think design should be fun! That's the best part about Apartment Therapy - most of the time it is fun and interactive and friendly and not elitist. But walk into a Ligne Roset showroom and feel the fun fade away. P(too), I agree that is kind of a silly argument. If I want to take a $6000 trip to Europe because I worked hard and want a nice vacation I'm not going to feel guilty because that money could have fed x number of people. I'm not an awful person, and I donate to charities, but buying some luxuries in life is something I'm not going to give up. Good Questions: Should I Spring For a Knockoff? |
