I just found a really cheap (i.e., free) humidifier for apartment dwellers. It's called a bathtub. Whenever I take a warm bath, I get out of the tub and leave the water in it until the next day. As time passes, the water in the tub evaporates and humidifies the air. I also wash things in the sink and hang them in the bathroom; it gives the same effect. Just leave the bathroom door open in either case, and you can end up with much, if not al, of your apartment humidified.

The grainy effect might be good for certain pieces. For instance, I liked how the horse came out. But I would definitely want to try this with cornstarch.

I just made the mistake of looking up 'Keane paintings'. I saw some of her newer stuff. It looks 'happier', but it's still disturbing and creepy. I think I'm going to go and slit my wrists now.

Also, while you have the right to like anything you want, why not put some non-kitschy art in your kids' room? I'd actually feel more comfortable putting a Bosch paining in a kid's room than the painting above, because Bosch is so complex and weirdly beautiful. Or Gorey print. Or any number of funny/creepy/cute prints. But this one isn't funny or cute. It's just creepy, and on the level of (as someone else mentioned) dogs playing cards or sad clowns on velvet (I actually had one of those in my room as a kid, and I couldn't wait to get rid of it).

I'm a goth. I wear black clothing most of the time. i'm known to wear a lot of silver and dye my hair bright red. I've even pointed my fingernails on occasion, and I get off putting in fangs made of dental material at Halloween and scaring small children. I even make bat-shaped gingerbread cookies for Christmas. And you know what?

That painting is creepy, and I wish I had some brain bleach right now, so I could forget I saw it.

Those Keane paintings weirded me out as a child, and they seem even more sinister now. Unless you want your kid to grow up to be a serial killer, don't put that stuff up in your house.

And we won't even talk about the sheer wastefulness of using items like Swiffers, Mr. Clean erasers, and one time use Scrubbin' Bubbles.

Olive oil will remove pretty much any gunk out there. Let it sit on a label for a few minutes and then start wiping like you would with Goo-Gone.

You can clean windows using vinegar and old newspapers. It's less streaky than Windex and it makes the house smell fresh.

Considering that we are getting more and more information from studies about the harsh long-term effects of man-made chemicals, I would strongly suggest that most peole leave those things alone.

@juliadevi: I did meet someone recently and we have a budding acquaintanceship. And I crochet, but it's a pain in the butt to go to crochet meetups in Manhattan; I don't have a car, and getting back home by public transport to Newark is problematic after 9pm. i've looked for events around here regarding topics like tea, food, movies and crochet, but most events are at a distance from me. : ( I'm hoping for better luck next year, when I move to PA and have a car.

Finding Friendship at Every Stage

At 50, I haven't completely given up on friendship, but it's not a big hope for me at this point. I don't have children, so I have little in common with women who do. Even though I'm getting married, my fiance is not the only topic of my conversation; most women seem to talk mostly about TV shows, their children, shopping and their husbands. I've tried being friends with men, but most of them think that makes it ok to hit on me. So I've pretty much given up, now that my best friend has been gone for several years due to complications from diabetes. I suppose I could call my fiance my best friend (which he is), but I don't think that's what you're talking about here.

Thank you for featuring a non-white family. I love seeing diversity online, since so few magazines offer that. Plus the apartment is wonderful too.

I know I'm being picky, but the Recompute is not a fully functioning cardboard computer. It's a fully functioning computer in a cardboard case.

Ham and American cheese sandwiches on Wonder Bread with Hellman's mayo. Probably because it was one of the few processed food stuffs my mother ever made. A few weeks ago I kept craving olive loaf sandwiches, another staple from my childhood. And lately I've been eating Jello.

Can Anyone ID this Very Unusual Table? Good Questions

I was a total PC person, and thought Apple was ridiculous. I refused to own any of their stuff.
And then I saw the iPod nano with the screen.

When my MP3 player died, I reluctantly bought an iPod Classic. Eventually, my pc died and I replaced it with a Mac, after I got disgusted with Windows Vista and found out that I could still run MS Word. Then my laptop died and got replaced by a Macbook. I bought an iPod touch, but coveted an iPhone; I ended up getting one. Last year I bought an iPad 2, because I was tutoring and the tablet helped me with my teaching.
While I still like PCs and think the Android is great, I'm glad I made the switch. It was the best move for me, and I think I didi it at the right time.

I once had a neighbor who decided to paint his wrought iron gold. And he added gold sparkles to the paint. What was once a bland inoffensive fence was turned into a garish nightmare.
But you know what? The world didn't end. Cats didn't lie down with dogs. My neighbor was completely oblivious to how horrified his neighbors were. He'd seen wealthy homes in his home country that were decorated like this (or so he said), and painting his fence like this filled him with pride.
I occasionally think of how this fence brought this man such a sense of accomplishment, and I'm glad that no one told him he was wrong.

I just looked at the house tour.
Tolly, ignore the haters. I could tell that I was looking at a real house, and I liked that. I thought the browns and greens were fine. Is this my style? No, but I liked it anyway, because it was like seeing an auto biography. It was lived in, genuine bohemian, and I thought that was great. Take your time and make your house into the space you want to live in.

This week I finished the last serving of a lovely meal I'd made a while back: chicken pieces sauteed in tomato sauce with roasted peppers and pearl onions, served with a glass of Layer Cake Malbec. The first few times I served it over pasta, but the other night I just wanted to sop up all that sauce! I eat alone all the time, except on the very rare occasion that my sweetie is in town. My budget is miniscule so I make most of everything from scratch.

Cooking for One would be a wonderful feature. Many of us are probably single, widowed or divorced. While I'm good at cooking for myself and keeping myself company, it would be nice to hear the experiences of others, especially how they save money or entertain themselves while eating.

i'm happy to see someone who is closer to my age, too. I'm 50, and sometimes I feel very isolated seeing pictures of babies and younger people. So this was a nice surprise.

I also like it when you show non-white and/or non-skinny people of various ages. I like seeing a variety of people in photos.
