Interesting concept. It doesn't appeal to me but am glad she found non-chemical wood. We once attempted to save money on camping firewood wood by breaking up some wooden pallets; until it dawned on us they're usually treated with formaldehyde. Imagine cooking smores in that flame. Never assume the 7-Up delivery guy at Safeway can successfully help you pick out beef for kabobs. I was responsible for bringing beef kabobs to a barbecue and I had no idea what kind of cut to buy. He happened to be rolling by and I asked for his opinion and he said, "What about those (pointing to a family packs of meat) they're already cut into cubes." Yes! How convenient! I haven't had pinakbet since I was a little kid and never acquired the taste of the bitter melon in it. I'd alway remove them from the dish. Maybe now that I'm older I'll like it? I'll have to make it one of these days to see! Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Seasonal Spotlight: Bitter Melon |

It's baby jicama - even sweeter and lighter in texture than its grown-up counterpart. You can peel and eat like apples. An Asian farmer also sells it at the Galleria Farmers Market on Thursdays (when it's in season for a few weeks). Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | What Is This Mystery Root? |

I just made Smitten Kitchen's "Ratatouille's Ratatouille" http://smittenkitchen.com/2007/07/rat-a-too-ee-for-you-ee/ for my dad's birthday over the weekend and it is officially a Summer Hit: tasty on the buds and easy on the eyes! If your CSA box has Italian eggplants, yellow squash and green cucumbers then this dish is a lovely one to make. I didn't bother with the 1/16" inch cut on the mandoline. It was closer to a 1/8" cut with a sharp santoku knife and it still made for a striking dish. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Learning to Love Eggplant: How to Pick 'Em, Cook 'Em, and Eat 'Em |

Honey lavender ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery in SF -- it felt strange to eat something I'd normally associate with potpourri but I acquired a liking to it. And some folks might find this strange but I loved it: Mitchell's (also in SF) used to serve maize y queso ice cream...corn and cheese ice cream! :) I o.d. on caprese salad all season: heirloom tomatoes, mozarella, fresh basil, balsamic, olive oil, salt and pepper. I can eat it a big pile of it for dinner alone and never need to turn on the stove. Hope you get your fix soon, East Coasters! What a simple recipe! I wonder if agave or honey will work instead of sugar in the recipe? I like having control over the sugar vs. the sucrose / dextrose / dextrose in store-bought fro-yo (http://www.pinkberry.com/html/product_5.php). Thanks for sharing! I love love watermelon aqua fresca! If I'm making a huge batch, I freeze some of it in mini-muffin pans and use the frozen round cubes in the aqua fresca instead of ice (keeps the flavor from getting diluted). I do the same thing for iced tea and lemonade too. Great at parties! Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Cure For A Dog Day Afternoon: Watermelon Agua Fresca |

I've brought them along back-packing and they're not bad - no worse than 2-buck-chuck. Whole Foods carries them in SF. What I love about them is they're light and convenient portions to take on day-long hikes (8 miles up in Mt. Tam) or back-packing (35 miles at Hoh National Forest). They've brought on some smiles with fellow hikers. ;) Wine in a box, you know, really classy. And there's no weight to carry from an empty bottle on the way back. Unfortunately, our sliced breads, English muffins, bagels and hotdog buns get moldy fast when left on the counter so we put them in the freezer (in their plastic bags with the air squeezed out). For no-knead bread, I slice up the leftovers first, then wrap it in foil then Ziploc before tossing in the freezer. I pop a frozen slice or two in my toaster for spaghetti, soup, etc. and it's as delicious as when it first came out of the oven. French macarons. Chocolate, pistachio, hazelnut, cashew. On the one hand, it's some of the most time-consuming, exasperating and frustrating effort I've ever had in baking. Just when the little beasts are baking to a perfect dome... cracks appear! Just when a perfect dome appears... the skirt/feet go missing and the insides are hollow! arg! doh! shoot! But on the other hand, there are those days when the stars are in alignment and perfect batches roll out. Glory! The reward: smooth domes with cute little feet - airy crispy on the outside and light & cakey inside. :) Almost (but never will be) like ones from Paris.
