It's doesn't look big enough to hold very much snow on top of it. If it was really wet snow a foot deep x 1 foot square it would only weigh about 12 pounds. Also it looks like it hinges near the middle so one side would open down into the chimney - might drop some snow on you! You could probably use it in conjuction w/ your cap to prevent that.

Tile has an eased edge that is also finished. If you cut it you will have a very sharp edge and the small portion sticking up above the grout won't be finished and looks bad. If you are using natural stone tile it's not as big of a deal because you CAN ease the edge, but that isn't really simple for the DIYer and that isn't really in the cheap realm anyway.

We have a very long and narrow hall just like this only it's about 38' long. From the front door you can see to the back of the house. After trying to figure out how to lessen the impact of it we opted to embrace it. We were refinishing the wood floors anyway so we did a harlequin pattern on the floor and hung a giant eyechart at the other end. That hall was the only thing we did not lilke about the house. ow we love it.

Most any cabinet shop can make them. Especially shops that do alot of commercial rather than residential construction. They should be able to get any type of laminate that is out there. If you already have laminate cabinets that you want to redo they may be able to relaminate them. Just look in the yellow pages under cabinets or millwork. Try calling a reputable commercial general contractor in the area and ask them who they use.
