Too bad Beginners wasn't nominated for Best Picture. That had my favorite interiors (and exteriors) of any movie last year -- Christopher Plummer's character's house, which is actually Neutra's Lovell house.

I even loved Melanie Laurent's little studio in New York.

Still think the one by The Brick House is best. Nicest materials and execution.

The floating credenza (and also floating bookshelves) is extremely common in Danish homes.

Knoll Saarinen executive side arm chair on casters with boucle upholstery. Picked it up on Craigslist for $35. Not sure if it's a real Saarinen because it doesn't have the open back, but in all other respects it looks just like the open-back one and there's a Knoll certificate attached to chair bottom.

I've had a different experience than spanky. Lived in Denmark for 6 years and on the average, Danes really do have and exercise better taste and sensibility than Americans.

Every friend's home was well appointed and also not cluttered. The homes were not overly minimal either. They often had nice collections of books, artwork and other objects. They were usually comfortable and lived in, but cared for.

This seemed to be the case regardless of whether the resident was young or old, wealthier or not. They just have this sensibility and it's not something they buy like in the U.S. -- where the wealthy hire interior designers or decorators.

When I moved to the States, I was appalled and depressed by the average American home.

Nice space and some of the furniture is very good (esp. the bed in the kids' bedroom), but most of the artwork is horrible.

That picnic table and bench set by Ilmari Tapiovaara (one of my fave designers) is so friggin' adorable, I would love to have it for my indoor dining table set.

And I don't think your bedroom looks bad with the arc light there.

Arc Lamp in the Bedroom?

If you don't have an overhead ceiling light, I don't see anything wrong with adding general light (for when you need to do tasks there in the evening) that way, as long as it's not cramping your space or flow.
But yes, a bedside table light or wall sconce is usually better to read by.
You obviously wouldn't be using the Arc light that way.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Arc lights, as long as you have the space for them. They're a great way of adding overhead pendant-type light without having to attach it to your ceiling.
They're a often great way to tie a room or a specific area together.
Castiglioni rocks.

Yes, 50% for. Yes, 50% against.

Some minimalism (I'm not anti-minimalist) feels very personal and creative. This is the opposite. Like a lushly impersonal boutique hotel suite.

I already have a le Creuset dutch oven, which my husband and I both love using. I got it on discount, because mine was a display piece at a hardware store.
However, I want to get a bigger one and can't afford a le Creuset right now, so I was looking at the Martha Stewart ones.
I decided to hold off because of some bad user reviews on Macys' site.

I'm interested in this All-Clad aluminum dutch oven mentioned earlier. Anybody else use this? What's the experience?

I like the idea of a softly pink bathroom. Gently warm.

That's what I call a grown-up, sophisticated home that manages to be elegant, yet unpretentious and thoroughly enjoyable. Lovely furniture and esp. lovely lighting.
