I think a good way to incorporate it, would be to frame it as you originally planned. But then add in one or two pops of color (that are found in the quilt) to your room. You can do this by adding one or two colorful pillows and perhaps a colorful vase / flowers.

You can still stay with the minimal, modern style for the pillows / vase. It's the color that counts. This might just make the quilt look a part of the room. At least it's worth a try.

Otherwise you could pick a favorite design blog and use their mood board services (it will cost you a few hundred dollars though) to help you incorporate the quilts into your design scheme. Good luck!

If you had written this line alone
"Very few people have closets and drawers that resemble those in catalogues. Trust me. I've been in a lot of houses and apartments and even after we've totally reorganized a space, it doesn't look like an ad for The Container Store. "
this article still would have been worth reading. Thanks for not allowing us perfectionists sink into another 'keeping up with the joneses' funk. Thanks from the bottom of my pocket book!

Love the whole house...would love to know where you got the backsplash tile and what it's called. So much nicer than straight penny tile. It's nice but not too busy.

Also, I love how you balanced color with calm neutrals. Specifically thinking of the living room art and curtains. You have a lovely eye for balance and detail. Thanks for showing us your home.

One more thing...don't overlook the canvas dropcloths others have mentioned. I've heard nice things about Home Depot's dropcloths. Abnd then there are some online websites. One that is local to me in Evanston, IL, but also online is Vogue Fabrics. It's like a very large fabric outlet. But I believe they have some bulk fabrics online. Joann, Hobby Lobby and Hancock offer online coupons that you can redeem in your nearby community.
Again good luck. Would love to see pics when the job is complete.

Can Someone Give Me The Lowdown on Slipcovers? Good Questions
4/5/12 7:16 PM

I've made a few slipcovers and the softest fabric I've used thus far is 'brushed twill' - it really makes a lovely slipcover. But I've used canvas too and while a little stiffer in the beginning, it's also a nice choice. I'm not sure about the weight, but don't go too lightweight, or it will rip / wear easily. Let your sense of touch guide you. Strong but still not too stiff.
I recommend washing the fabric at least 2 times in hot water before sewing. One washing is not enough to accomodate the shrinkage on a fitted cover. I like to freehand cut and pin the fabric together on the sofa itself. Leaving it a little loose (about 1 inch give on all seams) so it won't be too tight later on. I like to leave 2-3 inches extra width at the bottom corners - then gather the excess and button it together. This creates a cute accent and also make it look more fitted. (or you could install a simple zipper in the bottom corners.)
There are plenty of books in the library that can help you with putting this together. If you can do basic machine stitching, you can make a simple slipcover. Of course there are people willing to do it for you. You can probably get a recommendation or two from the staff at your local fabric store. I hope this helps.

What about the white fluffy mold that too easily grows in these? Please tell me how to deal with that and still have a flourishing terrarium. Thanks!

I have an idea that may complete the look and cover up those hanging cords.

Measure the width and height of the space
a) mattress to towel rod b)width between the hanging light cords but add an extra inch or two to cover the cords completely. Buy a piece of 1 inch thick foam that is the same width and height as above.

Cover the foam with a nice piece of upholstery or tapestry fabric and hot glue in place. The fabric does not need to cover the entire back of the foam...just the front, sides, top/bottom and an little of the back. It will make a cushion style backrest. (You can usually get a good piece of suitable fabric on sale at Joann's or Hancock).

Using the same fabric hand sew loops of fabric (folded under to conceal the unfinished seams) to the top of the cushion. Hang from the towel rod. If you need to be able to easily remove this cushion from the towel rack you can sew in some velcro strips so they can be removed without unscrewing the towel rod).

The foam cushion allows you to still hang the containers off the rod without making the fabric look sloppy.

Hope this helps.

I love the lines in Art Nouveau; one of my favorite styles. The living room rug perfectly complements this style but is not overpowering. I want to sit and just read in your living room some lazy sunny afternoon. I would feel right at home here.

Great job pulling the style forward in the accents like those beautiful candlesticks and those wonderful posters. I would love know where you purchased them. All I'm seeing in the market are less impressive examples of art nouveau.

Great job in your write-up Jason.

My Dad recently passed away (and Mom 2 years prior). We're preparing to put our childhood home on the market within the next few weeks. It's always hard to let go of our childhood home...even when we're middle-aged as I am. Thank goodness the memories don't get sold. We get to keep those close to our heart.

Thanks for sharing your lovely room and nook. I'd love to make something like this for my grandchildren one day.

I love this compact secretary. It's so great for small condo / apt dwellers, or neat-niks too. I'm sorry to say that I'm in the former category, not the latter. Oh well!

I like the fact that this can be used at two bowls. The top would make a nice fruit bowl; the holes in the bottom would allow air to circulate.

I like the wooden effect. Very tactile...makes me want to feel the smoothness. Very visually pleasing to the eye!
