I've thought about keeping chickens a number of times, but decided after a little research into the industry that it's not something I could participate in in good conscience.

Here's a question for people who use pet and house sitters: if someone, say an unemployed grad student with lots of free time, wants to start sitting but doesn't have any references (because of the just starting), what would you suggest they do?

Vertical storage is awesome unless you're 5'3", like me. I wouldn't even be able to reach that microwave, let alone the bulk storage above!

A note to anyone who might consider doing this with a vintage quilt they have strong, positive feelings for: don't. This is a terrible way to store a quilt, unless you don't mind if it falls apart. The pull of gravity will put serious stress on the top of the textile, eventually causing fraying, holes, torn seams. Also, light damage (bleaching.)

Best practices for quilt storage: flat (or folded if you must,) lined with archival tissue, in an archival storage box (meaning acid and lignin-free,) at a consistent temperature, low humidity, and in the dark while being checked periodically for pest infestations.

I know, super practical.

Penny tile looks awesome but I have it as the floor tile in my bathroom and it's an incredible pain in the ass to clean. All that grout! Ugh.

I'd caution anyone interested in making mead at home to actually try a lot of mead before you attempt brewing it. In my experience it's a pretty polarizing drink—some people swear by it, some people thinks its straight grossness. I'm in the grossness camp and discovered that after going to the effort of making it at home. Plus it's a big pain in the ass to brew, particularly if you, say, let your pot boil over. Ahem.
