I think the main downside is that it's less comfortable for the baby. We have the changing pad shown in the picture and have two terry cotton covers, which are softer/warmer than the plastic. You could also just use a towel.

i saw one of these in a store in brussels and then searched online for it for a while because i thought it was so adorable. then i saw the outrageous price! too expensive for me, although it does appear to be on sale now.

griffin, the marie claire piece isn't just about unusable fireplaces but fireplaces in general (although it does say that certain techniques shouldn't be used on working fireplaces).

Thanks, Kristin! I'd never heard of this store, but I rarely make it over to the left bank. I also like "c'est ma chambre" on rue des archives.

I don't think people should be allowed to do this to prevent people from parking in front of their house--the street is PUBLIC and the spot in front of the house isn't anyone's personal property. Why not limit such wild growth to the person's own yard rather than the public space?

Very nice views. Why not give a little background as to location (I'm assuming boulevard de la bastille in the 12th)?

I have a ventless dryer that works fabulously--so much better than having an apartment full of hanging clothes. It's the washer/dryer machine in one that doesn't work at all.

I agree with baltimorerowhouse. They're certainly popular here in France but I don't really see the use. We had one in our bathroom and actually never turned it on. I don't really care if my towel is warm--seems like a waste of energy.

i don't think it's a paris thing. i always assumed the reason it was pink was that it was cheaper than making the toilet paper bright white (as the french are generally very cheap!).

you can buy whitish toilet paper at monoprix though (under their "green" brand).

Very nice. Especially when you've only been living in the place for seven months!

we had a lot of stuff--but i think all you really need is:
- a safe sleeping area--somewhere you will feel comfortable leaving the baby for naps.
- a baby carrier.
- car seat (if you have a car).
a lot of the other stuff is actually useful (bouncer, swing, special playmat, bathtub...) but obviously not necessary. I personally wouldn't go without some sort of changing station at a comfortable height (we put a pad on top of the front-loading washing machine in the bathroom).

I agree about the antilop from Ikea--easy to clean, no tipping and very cheap. We used for about a year and it seems to have stayed in very good condition.

This house is beautiful. I think the Togo sofa looks good here, but I've never really understood the pull of this sofa. I've sat in them in the ligne roset store and don't find them that comfortable.

we have a similar situation in our apartment (radiators directly in front of windows) and used the panel sheers from ikea that you can hang from the ceiling and also slide out of the way if you want.

I also wanted to avoid the potty but found my daughter is terrified of the regular toilet.
