i'm number 4 or 5 or 6 for the vote of just painting it the same color as the rest of the wall on that panel. by sheer nature of the fact that it's wood, as well as sticking out from the rest of the wall, that will add dimension and texture on its own. no need to highlight it by painting it any different shades or finishes. also, it's just a lot easier on yourself if you ever have to do touchups. i had a huge old a/c in my living room which i painted the same color as the walls and it blends in very nicely and is now very unobtrusive...

yes - definitely white...or maybe a really light cream color? but definitely on the light/white end of the spectrum.

Is that a good spot for a piece of art? Perhaps you could get a huge canvas that would fit over that hole, and paint some cool simple design on it.

I like #2, the japanese print. it's muted and elegant, and will also probably be lasting.

is there anyone out there that can make a nice recessed soap holder (for inside the shower) that's not one of those ugly ceramic models??? I only see the wire ones (nice, but not optimal, as the soap ends up falling through the wires when it gets thin) and maybe one that cost over $150 (!!!).

Hi,
I am updating all my large appliances. I would love to sell them to get some cash, since I will be in sore need of whatever dollar I can get, but I realize this is unrealistic. Does anyone have any experience with donating such items for the tax writeoff? Can one do such a thing, and if so, do the organizations then come and pick up the items?

thanks.

Ohmygosh. I just did some quick research on DirectBuy with the BBB and found this link:

$7000 for a membership for 3 years (you pretty much have to pay it)!

I guess there's no such thing as a free lunch, and even if it's 50%, there's probably a good reason for it!

Hi!
Am starting an extensive remodelling project, and find it very daunting, most of which is due to cost of everything. I found something called DirectBuy in Manhattan, where you buy things (I'm assuming from tiles to appliances) at the wholesale price but pay a membership fee. Has anyone ever used this or had any sort of experience with them? If so, can you please tell me what it was like and if it's worth it?
Thanks!

Hi, I'm trying to weigh between 3 options for flooring. I'm purchasing an apartment that has wood tiles on the floors. It's a building that went up in the early 80s and has the original flooring that is that pretty unattractive wood tile (not even parquet!). The space in question is about 500 sq ft, between the living room and the bedroom. I am trying to weigh between 1) just installing all new hardwood floors, 2) sanding, re-staining and re-sealing the current floor (I saw a neighbor's place that did it, and the result was actually decent) and 3) just putting down wall to wall carpeting.

How much does it cost for the materials, and to pay a licensed contractor to do this in Manhattan for each option? I have slightly differing preferences for each end result (of course new hardwood flooring is the most beautiful), and therefore want to use cost as the ultimate measure. (I think I am one of the only people I know under 40 that actually likes wall-to-wall carpeting)

Thanks for your insight!
