This post inspired me. After perusing various websites, I went out and purchased some washing soda, borax, and Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild Bar Soap. Since I was just testing, I grated half the bar and added a quarter cup each of the washing soda and borax. I did my first load, and while there were no suds, the water certainly showed it was picking up dirt!

Only question now is if I should add the same amount (quarter cup) of baking soda. What job does that do?
