I was wondering why I hadn't been able to find it on the shelves. It was my go-to cooking wine but lately I've been having to substitute.

This happened to me when I was staying with friends at the artist residency in far remotest Iceland (Seydisfjordur)! Turns out they were filming a commercial, and when we got back from a day trip, they wouldn't let us in until they'd gotten their shot!

Paris is full of useless balconies like this - they add charm and air flow, so take your inspiration from them.

At our public market it can be tough to scout what's local and what's not. My rule of thumb is, if the boxes behind the table say "Dole" or something like that on them, don't stop, keep moving. If the boxes say something generic like "farm fresh produce," or the boxes say "Dole" and they've clearly been reused over and over again, they're more likely to be a vendor from nearby. And of course, if they say "Summery Farms, Sodus, New York," that's easy - they're from here.

We have a mutual agreement with a set of friends where we swap being the first ones to each others houses. It really cuts back on that awkward first half hour.

Your house sort of reminds me of this book I just finished paging through. It's chock full of "pickled" floors with ticking stripe couches. It's called "Swedish Interiors" - you might want to check it out of the library for inspiration: http://tinyurl.com/cjwjv2

We had essentially this for dinner last night. It's moving time so we're eating odds and ends, like mac n cheese with shrimp and leftover chevre, to clean out the fridge. Better to eat it than haul it!

This presumes that your purses all match each other. But the point of purses is that they don't match each other - they match your shoes, or your tiny dog!

Your windows are so close together - it might be interesting to run one long curtain rod across the span of the two windows, and put the velvet drapes, bunched together (right now they look stretched to their maximum width), to either side of your new big window. In the center of the rod you could run some sheers, or another velvet panel, so that you could get more light in the room.

And I think it'd be awesome if you had a big imposing crystal(y) chandelier instead of your current fixture - that would lower the ceiling and make the room more intimate.

Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Suggestions for Completing this Bedroom?
3/27/09 4:55 PM

Our new old house has fixtures like this (though not as elaborate) that are in their original condition. They don't have a cover - the previous owners just bought lightbulbs that look good bare and plugged them in.

Ours are also still attached to an old push button switch system, which allows half the lights to be lit for mood lighting, or all of them to be lit for full illumination. You may still have the guts for a scheme like that in your ceiling or wall wiring, if you're interested in having an electrician resurrect that feature.
