Aren't we all funny. I love the curtains too; couldn't find them on the Anthro site.

8 Bedside Lamps to Match Your Design Style

I want to third the thought of painting both walls a strong/dark color. We have a small apartment with an entry way that opens to the kitchen and living room and we painted the walls on either side of the door (in a corner) to anchor them as their own space. It looks great.

I like to make my gravy ahead of time because of the lack of stove top space at the last minute. We have so many folks come to our potluck style TG and you never know what kind of reheating has to be done in that 20 minutes of resting. Plus! That means I'm done cooking. I'm basically only pulling things out of the oven once my guests arrive instead of taking myself out of the party for 20 minutes to whisk.

This comes at a perfect time for us. We have a few large pieces up in the apartment but have a collection of pieces waiting for their place on the wall. We even have a lunch date to frame another piece today!

Question - my hubby does not agree with the low-ish height I tend to hang the art in the house; I haven't measured it but I bet it's around this height. We are lucky enough to have 12 ft ceilings and he thinks that the art should be higher to account for that. Any thoughts about hanging art in rooms with high ceilings? Same rule? Buy more large pieces? What do you do with all that wall at the top?

Hooray! I love lists. I have a super long list but will pick my top 6 to do first:
1. Purge sewing supplies and reconfigure storage.
2. Buy pendant lamp for the entry way and have wired in.
3. Frame artwork and photos and hang.
4. Buy coffee table or side tables for the living room.
5. Make curtains for the living room and bedroom closet.
6. Buy front and kick-plate for the dishwasher.

I love cooking at home. We have book club at a friend's house tonight...but there's always time to whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Day 9: Find a New Recipe and Cook Tonight!

Like others I have a landing strip - (expandable!) table by the front door with a bowl for keys, a coat closet, and a mirror for last minute checks before leaving the house - but it's gotten very cluttered. I have outgoing items borrowed from friends, 2 lamps from the second hand store, our earthquake emergency kit, boxes of canned tomatoes, and a collection of bags all stuffed under the table. Today I will find new permanent homes for these things.

I also need to find a better resting place for current magazines. Mine tend to pile up on a corner of the kitchen cart until company comes and then they get moved to another room and it can be months before I revisit them. I've never been a big fan of magazine racks though. Any other ideas?

I'm very excited to start another week. I didn't get any cleaning done this weekend but did get some long thought of projects out of the way (like making a new dog bed - and since she got a bath and clean blankets all on the same day, maybe it was AT dog day. :)) It rained all weekend and although usually that inspires me to putter around, this weekend it inspired naps and lots of bagel eating.

Tonight! We tackle the kitchen. Don't forget to clean the fronts of your cabinets...

Lonny mag online, MS Living (mostly for garden inspiration), and dang it I miss Domino too! How did that mag go under?

Thanks, all, for the butcher block advice! I will be scrubbing and oiling tonight for sure.

We got carried away yesterday and ended up cleaning the whole bathroom, down to the grout! The reminder to clean window sills was definitely needed - thank you for that. And today I will be re-potting a plant at work in addition to buying flowers for the house. Why not let my cure bleed over into my office space too?

Are there any good wax alternatives to the beeswax (I'm allergic)? I have been using mineral oil for years now and keeping things from turning gray is a constant challenge.

Also - I think this format is a great one. I have always done the cures, for the most part, alone. The goal of 20 minutes for 20 days is something that my husband is willing to try too; I'm looking forward to his participation.

I second painting the rim around the counter-top white. And then my suggestion would be getting under cabinet lighting and new hardware first. I am a big fan of white kitchens but having painted a similar layout of cabinets myself before, strongly suggest baby steps. If the edge paint, hardware and lighting don't do it for you, then consider the paint. Sand and paint your upper cabinets first; maybe the wood ones on the bottom can stay? And as much as I do like gray, the gray is looking funny...That version linked to by Tequila Red pushes me to say why not try it if the lighting and hardware aren't enough.

Good luck!!

I love the idea of red for the chair (I have a rocker street find that I'm just waiting for good weather to give the red laquer treatment!) with a neutral or black and white pattern seat. I also fully support turquoise for the lamp. And maybe an industrial lamp shade treatment - something metal and weaving looking - with a frosted bulb.

Good luck!

I would love to know the paint color of the kitchen.

To repeat a lot of what's been said here - it's so nice to see such great color! And done in a less modern/stark way... Love love love your kitchen.
