We use a Baby Bjorn Little Potty--they are one piece and about $10. We did EC and she liked having something that allowed her feet to be squarely on the floor when she was smaller. We also use an insert on the big toilet and she has no trouble using one or the other. For outings, I just hold her on a toilet.
Just a warning that I have heard that the Ikea potties are a bit shallow. I've heard of, uh, y'know... stuff getting all over.

It would be more practical to be doing a front carry, and the child should be higher up on the wearer's body. That pouch is too big for the model wearing it, and so is the one pictured on the cool mom picks site.

The USA has pretty much the worst infant and mother mortality rates in the industrialized world. And they are getting worse, not better.
I was planning and out of hospital birth. I had a planned c-section for footling breech presentation. I am grateful that my daughter is here safe. But it was one of the most profoundly alienating experiences of my life. I cannot understand what was remotely natural about what happened to me. I do not feel that I gave birth to my daughter. I just stopped being pregnant. I know other moms who have had c-sections feel differently than I do, but when I try to capitulate to the dogma of "I gave birth by c-section" I just feel like a liar.
I had to do FAR FAR MORE explaining and justifying when I told people I was planning an out of hospital birth than when I said I was having a c-section. Something is wrong there.

Yeah, food for mom--for labor and after. (More progressive hospitals allow food and drink during labor.)
The most important thing I had were signs saying that I was breastfeeding and didn't want my daughter to be given formula or artificial nipples, but I was at a really crappy hospital that discouraged breastfeeding. It was also really useful to have my Boppy.

A standard LeSport Sac makes a great bag at a fraction of the price!

Honestly, I think a lot of expectant parents get way too caught up in finding the perfect chair. I have spent far more time nursing on the go (something about the subway always makes my daughter want to nurse) than I have in the rocker we bought. By all means, find the perfect chair--but it's often just not as essential as it seems.

Oh-just to say in BLW, "weaning" is used in the British sense--meaning "starting solids" rather than "ending nursing." Allowing the child to self-wean from the breast is generally called "child-led weaning." Subtle but important distinction. ;)

Our daughter wasn't ready for food until about 9 months, at which point she hated purees and being fed at all--she wanted to do it herself. I had zealously prepared those little cubes and she would have none of it. We had much better luck with baby-led weaning.

Looks like you have a nice stash of cloth dipes there too. :)

My mom had a reed diffuser and it was accidentally knocked over. The scent that spilled RUINED a lacquered cabinet upon contact, and also did some damage to the hardwood floors. I wouldn't use one in a home with kids, pets, or near a fault line.

The Snuggle Nest is good in theory, but we found that it is so wonky in real life. Has anyone had good luck with one?

Oh, exxon23 and your coveted goodmamas! I'd love to get my hands on some, even though I am also hoping that diapers are almost done at our house.

Alisa--how about boring old preemie size prefolds? Try going to www.diaperswappers.com and you can get an info overload!

Speaking of which, one green aspect of cloth diapering that gets little press is the huge resale market. If people don't save their dipes for subsequent children, they often sell or trade them, so the life of a cloth diaper can be really long and, uh, fulfilling I guess.

This is a great idea, but I also found the toy selection disappointing. Most of them just aren't things I'm interested in having, even on loan. I'm glad they sanitize but using a non-toxic cleaner would be even better. I guess I find it a little surprising that it's not a greenwashed operation. Who wants to start the natural toys/non-toxic version with me?

Our daughter is 19 months and we are still happily sharing sleep and are not sure when the time will come to transition.

But... his whole idea of not "rewarding" them with a trip to your bed rubs me the wrong way. I slept with my parents on and off until I was six YEARS old, and many of my trips to their room were inspired by violent nightmares and sometimes night terrors. I still have night terrors occasionally during times of stress (had to explain that to my partner once when I woke up screaming my head off). Anyway, "monster spray" would not have helped me. A lot of the time I really really needed my parents to calm down, and I hate to think of how I would have suffered if they hadn't "rewarded" me. Every child's situation will be different, but I am grateful all these sleep experts weren't around when I was little.

I do think he has some good tips for helping children articulate the reasons why they area afraid, and I agree that changing the feelings of fear (if that's the issue) should be the first step, before changing beds.

It's playing at the IFC in NYC. There are baby-friendly showings on a few mornings a week. It really is a great film that exposes how far apart the maternity care system in the USA is from that in other industrialized countries.

ok, i'm sorry to comment so much but i am just so disturbed.
who wants to pay $87.50 for the "special indian doll"? what is THAT about? stick a "special indian" in your corner as a daily reminder of our troubled history? is it supposed to symbolize the movement to reservations or what? subtle social commentary? (oh, i doubt it.) or do some people just think it is a lovely addition to the home? it is just so bizarre.

ohdeedoh, tonight you haunt my dreams.
