"duplex" means something different in different areas. You're right that in NYC, the "plex" usually refers to the number of levels in a unit. But in other (most, I think) parts of the country, a duplex is a single structure divided into a two-family unit. So a triplex would be a single structure divided into a three-family unit. I had my bed between two windows for a while, and because the "between" portion of the wall was kind of narrow, the bed overlapped the windows a little on either side. It looked really nice, and I actually got lots of compliments on the placement (I can't recall receiving any bed-placement compliments before or since).
