I like to do this with salmon whenever I don't feel like searing. Almost always guarantees moist and fragrant piece of fish, and works with almost any combination of herbs and aromatics you might have on hand.

Love ATK and their scientific approach to explaining their choices and their research, all for recipes that can be replicated at home fairly easily. Coming from a science and engineering background, their show is always enjoyable.

Can you brew by flipping it upside down? I used to have a thermos/tea brewer that I brewed tea with in that manner to keep the leaves submerged in the water. The small basket is a bit of a deal breaker for me since I do drink a lot of green tea that needs more room.

I spent 10 days in Sydney last year for vacation and enjoyed the very good Thai food, kangaroo (hopefully not overcooked), and Australian wine. A friend had me bring back all varieties of Tim Tams I could find at the time (seven different ones) as well... The lamington in the pic for this post is nice, if you like pound cake with jam covered in chocolate and coconut.

Moonlight Brewing here in Northern California offer many of their beers on cask as well, and they are always unique and delicious.

Someone in line for the Blue Bottle in the SF Ferry Building recommended the Gibraltar to me this past weekend. Definitely an easy to drink fast jolt of coffee if you don't have time to sip a hot espresso.

I read a lot of food and cooking blogs and have watched PBS cooking shows since I was pretty young. For techniques, I usually look for youtube/vimeo demonstration videos and then practice doing the same. Learned how to break down/carve a chicken/turkey recently by doing that.

I live in an area that is constantly in the 60°F range so proofing bread dough has always been a difficult to manage. If I baked more bread, this might be tempting to pick up...

Went through my butter reserves in the freezer due to Thanksgiving. Time to restock that at least.

All butter for me, but I'm most concerned with the flavor. Lard and/or shortening would probably yield a more tender and flaky crust though.

I used a mix of golden delicious and gala apples last week since I had some on hand. I had honey crisp apples too, but I like eating them as is too much to use them for pie. Pie turned out great.

Honey Crisp for me. Sweet balanced with some tartness, crisp, with great flavor. I hate mealy apples.

@paulh: I have custom molded ultimate ears UE11 in ear monitors for precisedly what you suggested. Better sound isolation due to a good seal of the ear canal allows me to listen to music at a lower volume and still hear all the details. Most universal IEM's do a pretty mediocre job of isolating ambient sounds, so people end up turning up their music too loud to try to drown it out.

Aged beers of certain varieties do have better integration of flavors, mellowing some perceived harshness from bittering or alcohol, and makes for a some tasty sour wild ales. My experience with aged beers have really been at special events at local bars where cellared kegs are tapped though.

It is too easy to talk myself into buying extra imperial stouts, barleywines, lambics, geuzes and flanders red ales all in the name of aging them. Slowly running out of space in the back room of my garage for all the beer and wine stored there.

Cantillon Classic Geuze is so hard to find on the west coast with the prominence of craft beer fans over here nowadays. Usually sells out as soon as it hits the shelves. Definitely easier to get in New England.

Cuvee Renee Geuze from Lindemans is the better choice over their regular one, and is easily found.

Another fairly easy to find geuze is Oud Beersel's Oude Geuze Vieille.

Spend a few weeks using chopsticks for any meal where you can reasonably substitute it for when you would use a fork. Main thing is to get your fingers to hold the chop sticks well. The bottom stick should be held firmly in place with your pinky and ring finger against the side of the hand where your thumb is. This bottom stick shouldn't move much. Focus on the top stick so that it does all the moving, manipulated by your thumb, pointer and middle finger.

I think baking in general is very meditative for me. Working with your hands to actively create something has always appealed to me. I made a sweet cherry pie with some of the last cherries of the season and it turned out great. Cherries that barely needed any sugar added to the filling made for a great combination of fruit and buttery tender crust.

Russian River Brewing's website has a list of the stores in each area that they distribute to. Since I live in the Bay Area, I take it for granted how fairly easy it is to get, but the hype has risen to high levels, as some stores get it in on a Thursday and sell out by Saturday. It's one of my favorite beers, but not the best DIPA I've ever had.
