Tried to salvage leftover roast beef and old vegetables into a pot pie. Crust was OK but generally a sad effort. BUT, had these salty caramels things for desert which made us forget about boring old dinner.

This is timely. Mr. Cooks and I just looked at a house that we really liked, where we wanted to move, and the price is right. But the yard next door has piles of plastic chairs, tarps over who knows what, actual trash piled up to be burned I guess but blowing around loose in the yard. And maybe 10 cars. So I'm guessing I know why the house we like has been on the market for 200 days. I asked the realtor and and he sadly replied that the yard has been like that for years. We're out.

Love those tables with the legs that come all the way through to the top. So elegant.

My dad was a writer/editor and typed all day. He only used four fingers (peace fingers on both hands) and was ridiculously slow. When I became a writer full time, I thanked my high school typing teacher for making it possible for me to type as quick as I could think. Jeez, it only takes a couple weeks to learn how to touch type.

The first apartment I ever lived in without roomates was above a mirror and glass store on sort of main street. It was safe, no one even knew there were apartments up there. It was big for a one-bedroom. It had a niche between the fridge and the window where my drafting table fit perfectly. Big living area, nice size bedroom. One block from the laundromat. It was the site of my first home fire (no harm done) and honeymoon haven when I dated my now-husband.

Living and working in the Toledo/Detroit corridor, I sometimes feel like a new kind of pioneer. We're building a new civilization on the bones of the old one that is gone and not coming back. But the people who are here - the ones with jobs anyway - are excited about the future. When you live in cookie cutter 'burb, you just drift along. In our town, everyone can make a difference and actions count! Plus, a lot of the rules fall to the wayside when it's hard times. No one is going to get arrested for painting a wall mural without a permit, or selling tacos made on a home stove. Plus you can own a house on a lake for <$50K.

My sleeping buddy and I have our regular sides of the bed at home, and the other side at the codige. We don't know why. The silverware is also sorted differently between the two houses.

I had a friend who was not quite ready when a firm of executive movers came and while he was on the phone, they saran-wrapped his breakfast cereal bowl and packed it away, with the cereal and milk in the bowl. But by gosh they delivered and unwrapped it too.

Room temperature at cooking time is key. And yep, use the stove top and nice hot pan. I sear for total of four mins, turn the heat down stir in some wine to get the bits loose, stir in little liquid, plop in some good mustard, cover and take them out when they are still pretty soft when you press on them. They'll cook while they sit for five more mins and you will love them.

This is a great thing to keep for a house. My mom had a binder with the date that the furnace was replaced and service appts after that. When the roof was re-shingled and the warranty, all kinds of info on major appliances. When we sold the house, the realtor and later the buyer were so grateful. Nope, I haven't made one for my house yet.

Clean up by using up your stuff! For Christmas presents for friends, I went to my crafty/office and saw what had been sitting around for a long time and thought of something to make out of it. I ended up making super fun penants out of of stacks of colored paper, some embroidery floss, and some old photos and old cards. Now my office is clean and I was told I "won Christmas" with my groovy handmade cards. win win!

Maybe it seems a little unsightly but if you sprain your ankle or hurt your back, you'll so appreciate it. We had a member of the household bust a couple ribs and though you wouldn't guess it, using the bathroom became one of his biggest problems. Maybe you can hang baskets from it (IKEA-ish) or otherwise hide it.
