People who live in Garvanza call it Garvanza, even if no one outside does. It's a sub-neighborhood of Highland Park in the same way that Angelino Heights is a sub-neighborhood of Echo Park. Michael's Creatively Curated HomeHouse Tour |

Lovely house, but Angelino Heights is not the second-oldest district in Los Angeles. Olvera Street/Chinatown is from the 1770s, Bunker Hill is from the 1860s, Lincoln Heights dates to the 1870s. Angelino Heights wasn't populated until the 1880s, plus West Adams, Boyle Heights & the rest of downtown developed at the same time. Rachel & Jonathan's Cozy Angelino Heights Home House Tour |

i have a mantel in my bedroom (not attached to an actual fireplace) and I have the *side* of my bed pushed up to it, with my desk at the headboard of my bed. it looks great and i get a lot of complements on the unorthodox arrangement. Furniture Up Against the Fireplace |

Hey, my friend rented the cottage in that first photo a couple of summers ago! (it's in LA.) That porch is certainly dreamy, but this confirms my suspicion that most places look better in nice photos than they do in real life. I think it's because you can't see the tiny annoying details like little bits of damage, so your imagination is free to think that it's "perfect." My alarm clock is a cat that pokes my face with its paws/claws, while my cell alarm goes off and I intermittently press snooze. I require at least 30 minutes of this ritual in order to get up before 8 AM, no matter whether I got 4 or 10 hours of sleep. I went to the knife festival in Seki long before I was cooking enough to want a great handmade knife. Wish I had bought one then, but I have seen them at a specialty store here in the US. Anjali's Favorite Knife: Japanese Nakiri-Bocho |

I love that print & those colors too! (Would totally buy that chair from you ...) I'd go with a pillow in a red, blue or green a shade darker than the colors in the fabric. Same for the footstool ... and I think it would look better if the wood was darker, too. Upholsterers & Upholstery for Favorite Chair? Good Questions |

My bed alcove is very, very, very dark brown (almost black, but it's a key difference) and I love it. The color works like a barely-noticeable neutral and actually makes the space seem larger. Even my conservative mother thinks it looks good. Bold Black Walls for Every Room of the House |

Yeah, as a 6-year Angeleno I don't get these generalizations either. I certainly drink plenty (granted I have to do most of it before 2 AM) and when someone suggests dinner I assume they mean at a restaurant. A New Yorker In Los Angeles Style Section LA | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

Yes, these are pleasant places but pretty uninspired finalists. But what about the whites that lived in Silver Lake/Echo Park before the Latinos/queers? They were the majority only a few decades ago (and some never left). Such simplistic readings of gentrification (not taking into account swings in the other direction) really annoy me. And no, it's not always about race - there are plenty of neighborhoods in my East Coast hometown (and others) where large houses once owned by the white middle/upper class are carved up into apartments now inhabited by the type of people generally referred to as "white trash."
