Love the idea... but since its based on the fact that children love playing with empty moving or furniture boxes, makes more sense ($$$) to just give them an empty box and let them paint and decorate it themselves.

Great... I'm really happy! I live in The Netherlands and am always looking for decor solutions and inspiration for our small city apartment... looking forward to more homes with balconies, roof terraces, open kitchens, high ceilings, and not much space else...
Thanks Kristin!

Also live in and had my child in the Netherlands. Most people with babies here do have a playpen in their apartments/houses. It totally looked like a jail to me at first too, but it's a great aid for the child when learning to stand, handy for when you need to do something alone but need a safe place for baby, lets baby play while you do something else and enjoy the fresh air from the open balcony door. And, in our case, doubles as bed at night when we move our little one from our bedroom to her nook in the living room - we live in a one bedroom apartment.
I have a dark brown wooden Bopita with a handy drawer at the bottom, a hand-me-down from friends. When my daughter wakes up in the mornings, she pulls herself up to stand and starts singing her "get me out of jail" wake-up lullaby. Too sweet.
It's not a must have, but can be very useful.

We take showers with our 10 month old daughter often, especially earlier on, but she also enjoys sitting and splashing about in the baby plastic tub now. When visiting friends or family with a bath tub we take advantage and often get in all together.
The baby tub hangs from a nail high up on one of our shower walls, so it's always out of the way when not in use. Also a mini anti-slip mat does the trick and we place the tub in our shower so water everywhere doesn't matter.

Dear Mrs.S

Thanks for your concern - we appreciate it.

It seems that, to you, Africa is a continent plagued by malaria... we travelled to South Africa and Namibia (my home country - nothing foriegn about that) in their winter - which is low risk malaria season. There really is no concern.

Did you know that Angelina Jolie gave birth in Namibia? Since you're calling anyway...

I live in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and here it really is the norm to use a bike for everyday transport - to work, grocery shopping, going out to meet friends as well as transporting goods. So it only makes sense for parents to move around with their children the same way. If you search for 'bakfiets' on www.flickr.com you'll see plenty of examples. Like Devoir (from Belgium) says: front and rear seats are used, often parents carry two if not three children on a bike. Check out these images:

Must say (I'm not Dutch but originally from Namibia) I was initially shocked when I first saw a bike being used as a "family car" but because cities like these are designed for safe cycling with bicycle routes and traffic lights, no one here (except for children and the occasional tourist) even uses helmets! I even found cycling a great relief in the last two months of pregnancy when it was much easier than walking.

p.s. the Dutch are so proud of the bakfiets that it features on one of the new 'Dutch Design' postage stamps.

I read the rules a little while ago - I don't remember seeing if the competition is restricted to the USA. I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands - could I still enter? Looking forward to seeing the winning nest!
