Must try these once my cherry tomatoes ripen.

A shower can never replace a bath, as I've learned in my current place.

But a hot tub at a gym or friend's place helps. And I always choose hotels with nice tubs. My last trip I chose the room just for its deep soaking tub. I miss baths, but I'm saving enough in rent that someday I can afford my own place with a tub.

I was really sad that the fireplace in our 1920s rental is strictly decorative (no chimney anymore), but I found a candelabra at Goodwill and pillar candles on sale--$10 later and I'm pretty happy (and termite-free).

If you like mid-century style, check out vintage/antique stores in your area. I've seen tons of bar cabinets that lift up or open out on top to reveal a storage/drink mixing area with cabinets for glasses below. Here's a photo of one as an example (the top photo):

With a kitchen that size, get the dish drainer off the counter and either mount it above the sink or get one that stores easily and pull it out as needed. The magnetic knife strip attached to a wall and magnetic spice containers on the side of the fridge are also great ideas.

Our 1920's rental has two, small "walk-in" closets--one per bedroom (and the bedrooms are small in houses this old). The landlord installed Rubbermaid wire shelving system (cheaper version of Closetmaid), but we wanted more shelves and ended up finding a full set at a garage sale from someone redoing their closets. $10 to outfit a full closet (we only used a portion of it). So look for deals on craigslist or yard sales.

I agree with macbride about the half-enclosed shower. I hate getting the rest of the floor wet and can't enjoy my shower as much knowing it's happening. As for the red and black flooring, it was probably cheap linoleum (I had black and white at my last apartment)--cute but necessary to replace. The extra window makes everything so much brighter!

If you have an older apartment, be careful with plaster walls. Our landlord asked us not to use nails (he put in picture railing) because old plaster tends to flake/fall off under stress. Our Lack shelves are in storage, waiting for our next apartment.

I got the same set of printed fabric Penguin books for Christmas--time to find the right bookends so I can display them properly. Thanks for the inspiration!

I agree that it looks fine as is. But if you want something different, I'd take out the shelf and get a round, framed mirror. You have a lot of rectangular pieces, so a round piece would be a nice contrast. However high you hang the mirror, leave some space to keep a plant or flowers on the mantle to add another organic shape.

Thank you for the magic eraser suggestion! I was on the fence buying one for our porcelain kitchen sink but will get some now that I can use them on the glass shower doors.

And don't forget about trimming your cat's claws. We started doing this when we got a new kitten with extra sharp claws. With a towel to hold them and some determination, we've found that trimming the tips every two or three weeks really saves the furniture and carpet. Just don't cut too close to the base of the claws.
