I could not agree more with the commenter who suggested becoming friendly with the landlord/super. In my first place, I was friendly and always on time with the rent and when it came time to move out, I asked the landlord if he would like me to repaint and he said no and even helped me breakdown some shelving that wasn't going with me. The flooring was damaged during the move-out, but he still returned my deposit in full.

In our current place, we invited the super over frequently enough that his wife noticed a few fixtures weren't my taste and she suggested that they replace them. So I got those updated for free, without even asking. They've even suggested we use the building painter to paint our place when I asked about changing the colors.

Be nice, be neat, be patient and be friendly and you'll save yourself a ton of hassles. I guess that's good life advice, too.

I love the flame stitch - and have been working on my own bargello pillow. May take ages to complete, but it'll be worth it

Regarding the sentimental stuff, I find that I can sort through that box pretty regularly and shrink it a little. Sometimes I only need to save a little to trigger the memory, or I can scan or photograph some items that need to go. The best thing I ever did was to get rid of the things that triggered some less than happy memories. No one needs that.

We use ours constantly, to grill veggies, make panini (with foil wrapped brick on top), grill chicken, etc. It is a pain to clean and we really can't use the reversible griddle side anymore, since the grill side just never gets clean enough, but that's OK - it keeps our bacon consumption down. I would LOVE to know a good way to clean these things.

Ah, finally another renter with a hideous lamp fixture! I actually think yours is worse than ours. I have no good ideas yet, just sympathizing.

Question about the drum shade suggestion: How do you get the old shade off to install the new one without taking the whole thing down? (Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question)
