It's great to have ideas to do fun things, but remember that kids this age are learning how to pay attention, and letting them do the same thing over and over helps their attention span and focus. I lived in a garden level apartment here in Chicago, and had ants pretty bad the first summer. I put a little pile of instant grits down next to the window, and within a few days they were gone, never to return. NO MORE ANTS! Roundup | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

I live in a studio apartment, and I plan on converting the walk-in to a small nursery for my baby when s/he arrives. I've thought carefully about safety concerns and taken precautions. The child will sleep with me in the main area for the first few months, so air flow won't be a problem anyway. I can barely afford the rent here, so moving to a larger space isn't an option for me. The cost of caring for the homeless is actually very high when you factor in all the healthcare they need because of the exposure to the elements. It costs the state quite a lot, upwards of a million dollars per homeless person, to take care of things like frostbite and gangrene and respiratory illnesses, especially when they happen over and over during the year. $24,000 for a small home is a substantial savings, even if we gave them a new one every year. "Rip off" is semantics. Art, music, decorating, it's all just uniquely derivative of something someone else already did. Unless you're copying exactly and trying to make money from it, I have no problem with incorporating your own expression of a great idea into your home. Someone else can figure out the math, but even if it does take a few years for the turbine to pay for itself, isn't it still beneficial to use it to reduce the consumption of energy from 'traditional' sources? It's still reducing dependence on coal, oil, and other environmentally-damaging sources by a fairly giant chunk, and I think that's a good thing. As fun as it is to create a fort from your own imagination, I think there is also value in having a well-made, interesting object in the house that teaches children about multi-use design and thinking outside the box, if you'll pardon the pun.
