Or people who list anything in poor shape as "shabby chic! ready for you to refinish!" Puh-leeze.

Do You Suffer from Craigslist Elitist Syndrome?
1/19/11 5:40 PM

I am actually days away from moving from a shared housing situation to my own, 800+sf 1BR apartment. And I'm thrilled and can't wait! I have no furniture (not even a bed) since I've lived in furnished places the last 6+ years, but I'm looking forward to decorating. I'm also looking forward to being able to implement different color schemes in each room (living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, bathroom). I'm also thrilled at having three closets, plus a built-in linen closet (with drawers!). Did I mention there are tons of windows?

It's daunting to be moving somewhere with so much space, but I feel like I'll be able to breathe. Also, I'm a freelancer who mostly works from home, so it's worth it to me to not have to look at the same walls for living and working life (that dining room? It's going to be my library/office). And if I don't make my bed, it won't look like my whole living space is a mess.

Re: all the financial comments: ensuring a healthy savings is smart, but you're an adult so you can do what you will. That said, it will cost more to live in a bigger place -- more furniture, more utilities (esp if you will entertain more), etc. But if you do, or want, to spend more time at home, having more space is worth the price. For me, moving into my own apartment isn't too big a stretch financially, but it (obviously) means I'll be saving less money each year.

Worth Upgrading From Studio To One Bedroom?
Good Questions

"My son's grandfather"? Your father? Your father-in-law? WTH? Don't you have copyeditors? And I understand if it's not your blood son, but that's sloppy writing.

(nb: while the lamp story is interesting, "my son's grandfather" is what I will remember about this, and that's certainly not the aim of AT having posted this story.)

When is "Free" Expensive?

Do NOT ever wake a snorer up to make them "stop" snoring. As someone who snores (thank you deviated septum), I can tell you that when I'm more tired, I snore more. So, constantly waking a snorer up will just piss them off and then make them snore more.

The problem is not that there is a snorer for a neighbor, but that Rhonda moved into a building with crappy walls, and contrary to what she says, she's not a heavy sleeper (I'm a medium-heavy sleeper, and I've slept through smoke and burglar alarms, as well as slept through fire engines and ambulances). Whenever I've viewed an apartment, I've asked a list of very specific questions -- and that list starts with how quiet are the walls and floors.

BTW - the original query does not categorically state the neighbor is a snorer -- that's just speculation. It's possible the neighbor has a noisy sound machine, or other machine (would everyone be so outraged if it were a machine for a health issue?). I've heard a lot of snoring, and none of it has ever sounded like a "roar" or lasted non-stop throughout a night.

A former roommate and I bought a Karlanda sofa, and it was alright. If you sat and watched a couple of movies, the cushions would squash down and take overnight to plump up again. I think she still has it, but it's been about five years and I don't think it has much life in it.

Like other people said, you definitely get what you pay for at Ikea. If you can afford it, buy the highest quality possible.

I want the fuzzy pillows! Does anyone know where they can be bought?

I agree with Violetsrose -- it's necessary to understand what is being complained about. For some people, *any* sound is too much sound.

I'd also suggest not carpeting (traditionally) if you can help it. Like everyone says, remove your shoes. I would never live somewhere with built-in carpet (ugh!), but I love area rugs and I have several of them. When you figure out where the high-traffic area(s) are, double up on the rugs. For example, for a long time I had a rug I bought in Morocco (which was pretty substantial) on top of a larger rag-ish rug from Ikea.

As to the sound of the iPod, figure out a better placement -- which is probably away from a wall -- and make sure you don't turn it above a certain point (experiement with your downstairs neighbor, and this will also let you know if they're over-reactive or if you really are playing your music too loud).

Interesting. I've lived in Buenos Aires, and never saw a single recycling bin. There are cartoneros, who rip apart garbage bags left on the street to take out cardboard and paper (yes, this does make for a lot of trash on some streets). Though, BA does make people pay deposits for bottles, and they are reused by the drink manufacturers.

Not enough of anything to see. A bedroom with a brown wall, and some closeups of dresser tops? Definitely not enough to be in the running.

Like others, I like the brown, but there is too much without other accents. I can only imagine this place is incredibly, incredibly dark at night.

Gorgeous bathroom. I wish there was more in the way of accents to the walls, instead of everything matching the walls. For example, love the blue bedroom walls, but the comforter is ick. It would be even more gorgeous with some violet, teal, etc. And while I really like the red accent wall, I think a red/white/black combo is too easy and probably overdone.

Really, really lovely. That teal/blue color rocks.

I really like the kitchen, too. This place has really nice *combinations* of color, and that really stands out against many of the other submissions. Very nice.

Cute.

I have to agree, after looking at several submissions today and other days, people really should pay more attention to how they take photos. It's one thing to make a nice composition (e.g. dog), and it's yet another to take one that shows how the color *works* a room and how it blends with the next room. I'd be rating some of these submissions (like this one higher), if the photos were more comprehensive of the actual living space, instead of, say, doing a close up of a nicely made bed.

Once again, a single room! This is really unattractive (though, could be the photography), and looks like a second-rate West Elm room. The basic idea is good, but the execution and details (couch, decorative pieces) really fall short.

Not really colorful, but very well put together and lovely. And again, where's the rest of the home? It looks like the living room, and maybe a "dining"/piano room?

I love this room. However, is one room really enough for entering this contest??? To me, living with color means living with it in more than one room.

Really love this -- especially the dining room. The mix of colors on adjacent walls is really striking and very well done.

So there is an orange bedroom wall, a grey wall somewhere, a dog, and a view. How exactly does this show use of color and how it is blended together? Sorry to sound harsh, but a couple of non-panoramic arty shots doesn't fit at all with what this contest is about.
