My nephew, who is a great cook and who is majoring in food chemistry in college, starts baking his bread in a dutch oven and then takes it out and puts it on a cookie sheet at some point to get it crisp. And it's the best bread I've ever had.

My grandmother won a magazine's recipe contest long long ago with a cubed steak dish. She would line the bottom of a deep skillet with bacon then cover the (raw) bacon with cubed steak (cut into portions). She then layered sliced pototoes, carrots and onions on top along with a good bit of garlic and salt and pepper to taste. She would cover the pan to get the potatoes cooked through and cook for about an hour. The bacon would get crisp and stick to the bottom of the cubed steak. Probably not a particularly healthy dish but it was yummy.

That looks great! My great-aunt had a box like that in the bedroom of her house. She painted it to look like a window with a scene outside and turned it into a work of (folk) art. (My grandmother did something similar with a crack on the ceiling of an apartment she lived in. She painted it to look like a grapevine. When she moved the new tenants told the landlord they'd take the place if he left the painted grapevine.)

I had a vita mix back in the 80s and it was fantastic. I did quite a lot of things with it, including grinding up wheatberries and making bread dough from the whole wheat they produced. I made my own orange juice concentrate from organic oranges with part of the rind. It's long gone and I can't afford a new one. I really would love to win this one (as I know many others here would too).

I really miss caviar, I really love it but I've been on a strict budget having had my hours cut. (Not that it was easy to afford before but I always indulged at least at the holidays.) Yum, yum, yum!!!

Love, love, love your home Jay!!!
About having a big dog in a city (Hoboken) apartment, I planned to leave my beloved golden retriever in Florida with my ex-husband believing that he was better in the suburbs. The ex changed his mind at the last minute and I brought my (our) dog with me to my new much smaller apartment. I found that she was extremely happy in the city with it's parks and dog runs and long walks on the sidewalks. She liked to be with me, not at home, and I could take her out when I walked around town to do my shopping and errands. She could even sit by me (on the other side of the fence often but still next to me) while I dined outside in the towns many restaurants with outdoor seating. (Most would bring her water without my asking.) Her inside home was much smaller but her outside world was a lot bigger than before.

I saw the title of this item on the daily email and set to work on my overdue vacuuming. I agree that having visitors is the best motivation. Whenever my sister comes to town I start in on my clutter. (Although I have far, far less clutter than when I started reading Apartment Therapy a few years ago. I have probably thrown out 75% of my books, "collectables" and "memorabilia" - even excess furniture - since then inspired by all I've seen here.)

I work at a fund-raising marathon every year for a non-commercial radio station (wfmu) and listeners bring in 3 meals a day for the busy staff and volunteers. My favorite day for food is dumpling day when a long-time friend of the station brings a load of friends and family and they make us tons of dumplings in various flavors. They have made dumplings with huge shrimp, salmon, vegetarian ones (always), and other kinds, served with a soy sauce based dipping sauce and Thai hot chili sauce. They are so good!
My sister makes dumplings at home with (firm) tofu chopped in them instead of meat (no eggs). It's a lot of work rolling them all, so when I get a craving I often go to Rickshaw on 23rd. The chocolate dessert dumplings there are awesome!

I remember Todd Oldham's old design show on MTV. He would show you how to reupholster a chair (or something) you bought at a flea market and other such projects to decorate your place yourself. It was inspiring and his taste was refreshing. I've been a fan ever since.

I like Doctor Who just fine, the 8th one was pretty darn cute, although any of them would be swell. The first song I'd play for them would be Humans from Earth by T-Bone Burnett. (Although it's about us traveling to see them.) I really love that radio!!!

I need to make curtains for my apartment's back window. My grandmother made her own curtains, many different types, and I'm hoping her spirit can inspire me to do something in that space. (Not that I could approach her talent.) I also have a pineapple design quilt pattern I'm dying to try.
