Can you really slide on concrete? I love the idea, but the material choice is confounding. Even in the kitchens I've seen with highly polished, sealed concrete counter tops, they aren't really what I would call smooth. I'm so curious I wish there was a video about it!

Question!

Would it be possible to use canned tomatillos for salsa without terrible results? I made a super fast Posole recipe that called for canned tomatillos. Not having much experience with them I didn't realize this was just a "shortcut" and not because there would have been any real difficulty using fresh. Which I would have preferred. But now I have a jumbo stash of canned tomatillos, as the only can I could find was huge, and not a thing that I know of to do with them. Salsa was my thought- but I'm worried the canned will taste awful. Anyone with experience want to offer a suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

I prefer this with corn tortillas, but...

Crisp tortilla on hot burner or in pan.
Add sliced hard boiled egg.
Fresh Aruglua.
Salt & Pepper.

Wickedly simple and shockingly delicious.

Good luck!

Oh, sweet Louisville! I love my hometown. Having gone to college out of state and currently living in beautiful but dead end Savannah, GA I have found plenty of upturned noses when I announce my birthplace. But Louisville truly is a gem.

When I was a wild young thing the local music scene could simply not get any better, and since I moved away in '99, the city has only improved. We've always had theater, art, FOOD, SO MUCH FOOD, great bars, music, festivals (my lifelong friend started the Forecastle Festival and it's growing every year).... not to mention the gorgeous old Victorian neighborhoods and vast green space in the city. If you have the chance, stop in the city and take a look around; you just might like it!

PS: If anyone wants to buy an adorable brick bungalow in a great neighborhood in Savannah so that I can move BACK to sweet Louisville- let me know! :)

Oooooohhhhh nooooooo noo no no no no no no.

True story:

I was given a porcelain clown sitting on a satin rainbow as a child that hung from my ceiling light; despite the fact that I was terrified of clowns. (my Oma had the sad, crying clown oil paintings in her dark, creepy basement)

I had wallpaper in my room with huge, 60's inspired, primary colored daisies on it.

One night I had the most horrifying, scary awful nightmare that clown faces were coming out of the daisies and into my bedroom to attack me. When I tried to run out of the room, the door handle itself became the face of a clown coming in after me.

When I awoke, terrified, screaming, that porcelain clown was lying in the middle of my bedroom floor, somehow having fallen from the ceiling in the night. It was awful! I knew it was coming for me, and I think it lived in the closet from that day on.

That faceless monster of a lamp up there? Major kid fail. Yikes!

Congrats on your new beginnings Matthew!

I'll leave chair suggestions to others, but do want to express my agreement with Mariah- think COMFORT. Comfort comfort comfort. Not only in your chair selection, but also with regard to the decorative pillows for the sofa and lighting. I am fortunate as the time I spent on a therapists sofa was in a very stylish, very fabulous office in an old converted mansion. I was always very appreciative of the therapists effort to make the space look as good as it did. Entering into a well-appointed, comforting environment where I felt at ease was a great relief coming from the chaos elsewhere in my life.

Good luck to you!

Oh YUM! I bought a dark, purple Pluot thinking it was a Plum until I saw the label at home. DELICIOUS! So good in fact, that my boyfriend and I have been eating them daily. They have a fabulous firmness to them, gorgeous color and are the perfect sweet/tart combination. Absolutely wonderful fruit. I'll have to look for this book at the library!! Thanks for the write-up!

Ooooohhhhhh oh oh... no no no no.

This is exactly something I would see in the Sky Mall mag on the plane, turn to my boyfriend, show him and say: "You like this? Huh? Yeah? You want some of these? Really, I'll get you two of them!" And then he punches me in the arm.

I have several cast iron pans handed down from grandmothers. I really love them but I find myself (probably irrationally) concerned every time I cook meat in them. I worry that when I cook meat in the pan that when finished, instead of just wiping it out with a paper towel and salt and then greasing it and heating it and putting it away, that I have to use a little soap and hot water to get rid of anything leftover from the raw meat. I'm not generally a paranoid person and I feel like this worry is unnecessary. I am bothered by this behavior because I feel like every time I do this I'm losing the potential for greater and better seasoning on my pans which is what I am going for by using them!

Help cure me AT Kitchn readers! What do you do when cooking meats in your pans? Do you ::gasp:: cook meat and then veggies while the meat rests and not clean it between? Oh I need to be educated! And set free!

I grew up in Louisville, KY swimming at Lakeside which is a huuuuge rock quarry turned *amazing* swimming pool that I have yet to ever have one-upped by another (except for maybe in terms of view: infinity pool on the beach in Jamaica! Woo!). We swam constantly growing up and I had no idea what a luxury a cold swimming pool is until I moved to Savannah, GA a few years ago. The heat in the deep South is legendary and while the beach is only 20 minutes away, the water is like mild bathwater. Not to mention that the beach here is extraordinarily icky and the water murky and mysterious. I've seen silly string floating by, beer cans, diapers, beach toys, random trash: it's disgusting. When I say I long for a pool here, I mean it: I LONG FOR A POOL! I dream of a pool. On dog walks I see people's unused pools through cracks in the privacy fence and literally have to talk myself from climbing over. The heat here leaves you contemplating the depths of puddles and soaking yourself with the hose when watering the plants. It is H.O.T. But alas, a city with sun and heat 85% of the year spent all of their money on an INDOOR pool complex. It's shameful. I have yet to find an affordable, clean place to swim for the general public and it is sad.

Whew. Sorry for all of THAT! But people, hear me now, if you need a pool sitter; for the love of all things great and holy, send me a message. I've got my suit on under my clothes.

Ugggghhhhhhh! This is something I constantly struggle with! With rampant bike theft in our town and our small, potted plant covered front porch, keeping them outside where I'd prefer is impossible. The only rooms they can possibly fit into indoors are our living room or dining room; and there is zero vertical space available in either. This leaves only two storage options: leaning against the wall below the front windows in the living room, or leaning against the wall below the side windows in the dining room. I HATE the way they look in either room. They make the rooms feel even smaller and although I truly love our trusty bikes, they just look soooo junky.
