Apartment Therapy Boston | Good Questions: Keep This Well-Loved Sofa?
5/11/09 5:49 PM

Hi Maggie,

I have a sofa set in a similar color. My husband found it, the matching chair, and a big mamouth ottoman at a garage sale for $150, and there was no stopping him -- he had to have the man couch.....in our living room.

Because I like a harmonious marriage, I've embraced the sofa, found a paint color I liked with it, and used some witty art to make it seem less serious and give it less of a traditional feel. I used Silhouette from Benjamin Moore -- not the best picture (we'd just finished hanging photos), but here is an example. The rich cognac color really pops against the dark walls.

We left our stainless steel grill out over the winter without any cover. Stupid us. We are on a third floor balcony above the street, and the road grim/street salt is adhered to the outside of the grill and it has begun to rust. Any suggestions?

I believe that the paintings over the couch are hung that high so that the spots shine on them -- these definitely need to be lowered.

Love the colors.

We allow our great dane on the furniture, with the exception of our leather couch and chairs. That breed tends to like to sleep on very soft, bulky things that are elevated. She sits on furniture just like a person too :) We taught her to get down on command and wait to be invited, and it was very easy. She was not a baby when we got her, so we taught her by setting up a specific place on the floor (a rug next to a couch, for example, and coaxing her down onto it while telling her to get off. After a few weeks, we didn't need a rug, and now she simply gets down when told.

I love the contrast between your dark walls and light furniture. What color paint did you use? What is hanging above your stove?

Your bedroom looks very restful. Do you mind sharing how it feels to sleep and wake up in a black bedroom?

Her style reminds of KWID, with a more updated, less been-there-done-that feel.

Great place --- it looks like you only have one small closet in the space. Does it house your clothes, vacuum cleaner, broom etc all in that one spot?

I agree with Sally305.

Living "green" isn't only about what you use as a consumer, but also about how much you use as a consumer. I often feel like homes that have green materials but not green ethics are all for show and bragging rights....

fjorlief brings up some sound advice -- the standard tread is 11" deep and the standard step riser is 7" high. With the height of your doorway, that is a significant step up -- and there really isn't a way to remedy that without making it seem more awkward. Since you have sich a high rise up or down, I would make the step deeper than the normal 11" to provide a better footing.

I don't think brick is the way to go with an interior stair, unless you are going to go to the trouble of sealing it and smoothing it so it doesn't look rough and uncomfortable to bare feet. I would do a sturdy wood stair tread on top of a built wooden box covered in drywall and painted.

I adore your kitchen cabinetry -- it has a very European flair for a Texas home. Great job!

When I first saw the post regarding your wall color a few months ago, I never imagined there was a kitchen on the other side of the fireplace. How elegant.

I love the way you've solved some of the challenges of a Victorian home -- like the light installation above the dining place when you have no junction box. Great work.

@StudioStarter

The area with the least traffic should have the door swing into it -- a hallway has more traffic than a bathroom, so with the door now swinging out to the hallway, you are more likely to cause accidents and bump others.

I agree with Anna -- I think pieces made of veneer, when not well kept, can resemble cheap dorm room or frat house furniture. I really like Anna's idea of doing the sides (and possibly top?) in a contrasting black stain or possibly a glossy coat of white paint or laquer.

I'm really sad that out of the plethora of great (and unique!) furniture offered on Craigslist, AT seems to gravitate towards the same Crate and Barrel, DWR,, Room and Board, and CB2 search keywords. Isn't one of the beauties of Craigslist the furiture that you CAN'T find in a big box chain store? Come on Janel -- you completely missed these items:

I adore the antler piece in the bathroom. There was a similar one on ebay recently -- it was a standing piece over 5' tall. It went for over $1000.
