I've had mixed experiences with CamCard - sometimes had to just type everything in by hand, because the app made so many errors in transcribing.

I'd like to recommend JotNot. It is an iPhone app (I no longer have Android, so can't speak to it), but it is free. I use it a lot for the endless papers I come across as a family history researcher and as a teacher; I just take the photo, save it to my camera roll, and email it to myself from there. If I've done a large number of papers, I can pull the images to my computer when I connect my computer to my phone.
I would just use my phone, but have found the app does a lot to clean up the image for record keeping.

I know it isn't frugal, but I wanted to chime in - get your chimney inspected and cleaned!

In the Mid-Atlantic in particular, a couple chimney inspectors have noticed a lot of cracked chimneys - possibly due to last year's earthquake - that need to be remedied before use.

I have the HEX case, and haven't had issues with theft. I usually fold back the cover when taking calls; it creases the leather, but that's a trade off I'm willing to take instead of taking the phone in and out of the case. I generally don't take calls in public, so don't worry about my credit card showing - and no, it doesn't de-magnetize.
My only point is that it doesn't shield the phone very well from drops if you're using it. That said, I love it for its ability to let me travel lightly.

To address (V) (;,,;) (V)'s point...
In cleaning out my childhood room and the attics of a couple family members, I realized that some small knick-knacks and things really do have meaning. I was lucky enough to realize this before I set up my own home. So I never buy myself knick knacks, but have space for and can enjoy what I've been gifted (or will be gifted) over the years. It's a pretty proactive approach, and takes planning and restraint, but I'm so glad I did it!

I have to take that "fifteen" minute advice - and yes, I routinely find that minute fifteen finds me so focused I don't stop working.
I had to laugh with the posters who procrastinate by doing other chores. In college our apartment was always cleanest at the end of term :-P

Just a heads up, and you may have more leeway as a design teacher - but the biggest obstacle I've run into is district policy. No curtains, household lamps, unapproved rugs, scents, etc. Sometimes you can get away with it, but think before you plunk down your own money.

@deucer Square's terms require that you not give a Square-transactions-only fee. I figure the fee into my lesson fees, assuming I'll be paying card fees or for stamps either way.

How do you carry it around? I just got mine and am afraid to just dump it into my purse.

@urbancricket - thank you! I was thinking the homeowner should really just lock the door and stop inviting over the in-laws, rather than sliding all of the furniture behind the door.

I'd actually amend the lock recommendation: bring it for the hotel. I can travel for a month, including a musical instrument and grad school text books, with a carryon and a bookbag, but not if the hotel staff is going to swipe my wrinkle-free, stuff-anywhere, wear-anywhere wrap dress.

To take yet another left turn... have you thought about a post exploring classroom decor? I know it sounds odd, but as a school teacher, it's something I constantly think about. I'd love to apply some of the principles of this site to my classroom.

If your veggie or pasta water is still really hot, you can even pour it on weeds to kill them. We got rid of English ivy this way.

If you have access to the water output from your washing machine, we usually get a rain barrel's worth each run - plenty enough to go over our garden and lawn (although we've got a tiny lawn).

While the NYT is worth paying some money for, the prices definitely seem high. NYT says daily print delivery is $7.40 a week in my area; that works out to $384.80 a year. I'm not sure why an electronic subscription costs more than a paper subscription requiring printing and delivery.

Like many of the posters above, I do my bread by hand. In college, I didn't have the funds or space for a mixer, and now, the quiet handwork is soothing. I like the better feel for the dough that I get too.
But I do want to point out - while books and other tools can be handy, you really don't need anything special. I use a glass bowl (as bread doesn't seem to rise in plastic), a pyrex measuring glass for the milk and butter, and my hand.
