Just Hungry has a great recipe for making your own shiozake. It's totally worth the effort! Recipe: Salmon and Black Sesame Onigiri (Japanese Rice Balls) Recipes from The Kitchn |

I use one World's Best + Modkat box for two cats, with daily scooping. It's not ideal, but it works for us and the space available. Smell isn't a major issue, and turning on the bathroom fan deals with most of that. I haven't had any issues with pests. The cats still manage to scatter litter around, though not quite as much as they did before. World's Best gets dustier as it breaks down; so it's not too dusty at first, but it gets worse with time. Still, it's much less dusty than clay litters. Ideal Kitty Litter for Apartment Dwellers? Good Questions |

I have the Bonavita with a gooseneck spout - no plastic touches the water, and it's great for pourover coffee (my primary use for it). Is There a Plastic-Free Electric Kettle? Good Questions |

I've got a cheapo plastic canning funnel with ridges that let it rest securely on both regular-mouth and wide-mouth jars. It's one of my favorite things! My Kitchen Treat: An Admittedly Dorky Canning Funnel |

Another vote for canning jars here. Jars with straight sides, like wide-mouth pints, are the best. There's no risk of toxins leaching from plastics (just don't microwave the reusable plastic lids); they're infinitely reusable; and you can run them through the dishwasher. I generally move them from the freezer to the fridge the night before, pop them in my lunch bag in the morning, and then heat them up in the office kitchen microwave (sans lid) for lunch. My standby strawberry-rhubarb pie recipe is Deb's from Smitten Kitchen: strawberry-rhubarb pie, improved. It pairs perfectly with her all-butter pie crust, and the use of instant tapioca solves the sloshiness problem I've had with most other recipes. When I first adopted my cats, I did not let them in my bedroom, but I caved after a couple of months. Now they curl up on either side of me, but on stay top of the covers. It can be tricky getting out of bed in the morning when there is 24 lbs of cat pinning the covers down on top of you! Reader Roundup: Pets in Your Bed? |

One more vote for Flor tiles! When I moved into my current apartment, I bought one large area rug from Dash and Albert and one set of Flor tiles. I have two cats. The Flor tiles are doing fine; the Dash and Albert rug, not so much. Carpet and Window Treatment Ideas for Living Room? Good Questions |

I have the West Elm ones in a dark red. They haven't had any structural issues, though I haven't ever tipped back in them and have them set on hardwood or linoleum (so no uneven rugs underneath). However, they chip very easily. If that's going to bother you, I'd skip them. I probably wouldn't buy them again. Can West Elm's Scoop-Back Chair Owners Attest to Strudiness? Good Questions |

I am fortunate in that I have spots high enough that the cats can't reach them that get adequate lighting. But I stick to non-toxic plants just in case one of my cats ever finds a way up. Indoor Plants: How Do You Keep Your Cats Away? |

I switched to World's Best Multicat early this year for the two kittens that I adopted last summer. The dust was unbearable--I stopped being able to wear contacts, and had a horrible hacking cough for two months. Fortunately my cats are not picky about their litter and adjusted quickly to the change...now if only they would be less picky about food! Why Clay Cat Litter is Evil moderncat |

I have the smaller OXO spinner and it's perfect for me; since I'm usually cooking for one or two, I don't need the larger size. Spin Right Around: 5 Salad Spinners to Consider |

I used an OXO travel mug for a few years, but I always felt like the lid was never getting properly cleaned. So I've switched over the classic Thermos Nissan travel mug. The lid is not perfectly leak proof, but it is sufficient for a regular drive. And the lid can be opened and closed with one hand and thoroughly cleaned. The Nissan mug also keeps drinks much hotter than my OXO, especially if I remember to preheat the container. And the whole thing fits into my car's drink holder. I'm very happy with it.
