I agree with a couple posters above that the American idolization of French women is just kind of silly (they're regular people too!) This is really a lovely post though, and the advice given is excellent.

I'm surprised at the negative comments here. I'm generally into a natural look but when refurb projects don't work, a nice solid paint job is the best route to go! International Klein Blue (named in the 50's by Yves Klein, guys) is a classic color in the design world and looks great with the the cool toned hardware.

We have a teeny tiny kitchen with about 3 square feet of counter space, so a microwave has never been an option!

I make my coffee in a Chemex. The brand makes a great little metal coil that sits over your (electric) stove's burner, and the glass Chemex is placed on top to reheat once your pot has gone cold.

With all food leftovers, we just reheat in a skillet or in the oven. It's so much better than limp microwaved food anyway! Lucky for us, we don't eat meat so defrosting without a microwave is not something I have to worry about.

It's most likely a "one and done" piece. The shape is pretty simple and the art is amateur-ish (in a wonderful folk art way!), so you might not have a table that is by any specific designer or manufacturer. I don't think it's mid century...those legs are too straight and don't fit in with the style of that time. It could be anywhere from the 70s to 90s.

The single wall looks pretty, but I love the functionality of the kitchen work triangle: stove, sink, and fridge are all within a few steps of one another. I think I would have a really difficult time adjusting to a single wall of kitchen space!

Generally antiques are >100 years old (though some say 75 years), and vintage is anything that is at least 20 years old.

Interesting! Here in Massachusetts (north of boston), they are usually 9-2ish Saturday and Sunday. 9:00 always seems a bit late to me, I miss the 6am cruise-and-hunt before breakfast! I guess that's what the Sunday flea market is for.

The first and third pieces aren't antiques, they're vintage. Is that part of the question?

Another vote for Macy's! We have a super comfy, traditional style sectional that we were able to squeeze through our tiny doorway (after lots of cursing we realized we could take the legs off). Their prices are very reasonable and they have sales on furniture often.

Reupholstering the seats won't bring down the value of the chairs, if you're worried about that. Original upholstery on dining chairs isn't a big deal thing that mcm enthusiasts worry about, and it's so common to have them recovered in an updated fabric (often preferred!). You could easily have new seats made by an upholsterer for around $40-50 a seat, with new foam.

I'm a thrift store/flea market hawk (and a vintage dealer), so I have a $200 rule on furniture. Nearly everything in our home was previously owned by someone else, including every sofa we've had. The current one was free, but our sofa before this was a $150 craigslist deal.

Good coffee and decent red wine. Depending on how tight the tight budget is, I like to have one nice candle in the house for just a teeny bit of luxury.
