I replaced a tragic set of 1980s vintage vertical blinds in my bedroom with simple white curtains from Ikea. TOTALLY transformed the bedroom, for the better, of course! Keep it Simple: White Curtains and Natural Blinds |

Perfect timing on this article! I need to get a new doormat for my front porch, but haven't been impressed with any of the styles I've seen. I love this idea! The 15 Minute Doormat Upgrade |

I cried when I accidentally ruined the finish on my Calphalon saucier, only to discover that it was discontinued. I love the shape of the pan - the depth, the curved bottom and sides, and the volume. I continue searching for a suitable replacement. Stephanie's Favorite Pan: All Clad 2 Quart Stainless Steel Saucier |

re paper plates: We used to use them a LOT - for toast, sandwiches, snacks. I went to Goodwill and bought a stack of glass cake plates (about 6" in diameter) for 25 cents each. They hold up surprisingly well. 10 Ways to Kick the Paper Habit |

At my school, they make us sit at these types of tables in the cafeteria during faculty meetings. There is nothing worse than plunking my 40-something butt on a small plastic circle with no backrest for two hours. Industrial 12-Seat Cafeteria Table Daily Find |

You can only use this for products you bought at Best Buy, I believe. My daughter wanted to sell back an old Mac laptop, but they wouldn't take it. Kinda limits the usefulness of this program. Tired Tech? Best Buy Will Buy It Back! |

Just a tip - if you have old notebooks that you won't use, see if a local school would be willing to take them. I have some students who don't have money to buy notebooks; if I can give them a notebook, I will. (Many teachers stock up at the back-to-school sales, but I need a constant supply throughout the school year.) Also, even if I don't give them away, I hand out notebook paper for doing work in class. I'm baking cinnamon shortbread cookies. (I just add 1 tablespoon cinnamon to a standard shortbread recipe, then sprinkle the top with cinnamon sugar before baking.) Delish! I'm sure my son and I will devour most of them over the course of the weekend. What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of December 4-5, 2010 |

I've had whipped cream last a long time in the fridge. The trick was stirring in a spoonful or so of lemon curd. Gives the whipped cream an extra zing of flavor (but not so much it's overwhelming), and stiffened it up enough to keep if from separating. Quick Tip: Make Your Fresh Whipped Cream Last Longer |

Family dinners are a must with us! Right now the older two kids are at college, so it's just the youngest, hubs, and me at the dinner table. I love summers, because all of us are home, and dinner can take a couple of hours just because of the conversation and the fact that 4/5 of us don't have to get up early and go to work the next day. Best find for me, in my suburban subdivision: about two months before my oldest child left for college, my daughter and I were driving to school and spotted a large (i.e., not mini-cube) dorm fridge at the curb. That thing looked brand-new! I did make DD open the fridge to make sure there wasn't a dead body or a head in there. She and I loaded it into the back of my SUV and proceeded on to school! We plugged it in when we got home, and it's still chilling beer two years later! Tips for Mastering the Fine Art of Dumpster Diving |

If I'm seriously in a rut (because, frankly, I end up being responsible for planning, grocery shopping, and cooking all meals that don't end up on the grill), I threaten a kitchen strike. This usually involves telling the three teenagers that each of them is responsible for making dinner one night. I supervise the planning to make sure that it's a fairly well-balanced meal, but they make the shopping list and go to the store, then cook. After three nights of not having to cook, I usually snap out of my rut. Bad Mojo: How Do You Deal with a Cooking Rut? | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

It may be gilding the lily, but try folding in 1/3 to 1/2 cup lemon cream for every cup of whipping cream. My daughter made this as a cupcake frosting and the flavor is really fresh. Also, the leftover whipped cream held up without separating for several days. Summer Recipe: No-Bake Strawberry Icebox Cake | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

I have (and use) The Gourmet Slow Cooker and The Gourmet Slow Cooker vol. 2, by Lynn Alley. Volume 1 focuses on global cuisine - Italian Pot Roast is my family's favorite, served over polenta. The second volume focuses on regional American cuisine - there's a Wild Rice and Black Walnut Pilaf that is very tasty. Save Energy and Space: Use a Slow Cooker | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |
