Very odd indeed. The NYT just ran an editorial about the demise of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and what newspapers need to do to compete in a Drudge Report driven news world. I understand that the NYT is on the brink - they just sold and leased-back their building to attempt to settle some overwhelming debt and every dollar is precious to them. Still, collaboration seems to be the way out of this. AT has a fairly broad reach and anything that would drive the NYT onto PC's nationwide can't be a bad thing.

I'm with Lisa. Make the place about people and not technology. Place the sofa mid room facing the window with the chair backed up against the window - close to the entry- angled. You're now in the captains chair talking to your guests. Also, your TV swivels and when it's time to kick your pad into DVD/date mode just swivel the set towards the sofa.

My best deal ever on a mattress set came from a W Hotel Store online sale which netted me a quilt top, queen set for $925 including white glove delivery.

I got the tip here, on AT.

Cat stewardship is a tough road to take when you're trying to keep the home together. I inherited an awesome love seat from my mom and my cat, who has never bothered furniture before, went to town on the arms.

I've got lots of "stuff" from the U.K. my mother left me as she was a British immigrant. It's nice, absolutely not my style and I am a guy who doesn't do to well with Victorian era pieces. I offered some of it up to younger relatives in the UK, but they seem disinterested. Shame to have it dead end in an obscure antique store but I guess that's the way of it...

When the water freezes you either pull it for the winter (at a nearby marina) or put a couple bubblers under it so thewater doesn't freeze. My family used to have a cottage up there and dealt with this in the winter.

The Caribe Hilton is incredible. Around the corner is The recently remodeled Renaissance Hotel. They have a really interesting decor including a wicker interpretation of Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair.

A little like Star Trek the Next Generation with a dot com conference room flavor. It's still kind of neat.

My dad hand built a cottage in that area back in the 1950's. Hand built meaning no power - all hand tools. There was no road into his property and he floated all the materials in on a raft of old truck inner tubes (pulled by a boat he built),

He didn't make much money back then so he used salvaged wood from tear downs in Toronto and over stock from a lumber company. On one job site he was able to score a barrel of used nails that he straightened on a salvaged anvil.

Did he plan on this being green? Not at all. But times where different and "rooting" around for old materials was what you did back then. This was the generation that would fix their own stuff.

The stories go on forever on resourceful he was, but the reason he built it was so his kids could get out of the city during the summers. What about mom? She loved it and was a real trooper as I spent my first summer in diapers living in a tent with them as he built it.

Just a side note for anyone who cares: I bought the nickle plated bed in the photo and am impressed at how rugged it is. You could clamp an outboard motor to this thing and water ski behind it. Well, if it floated - I'm sure you get the point.

I got an articulated mount for a 40" Samsung and paid $125 at Sams Club (on line). The ones for smaller TV's where a lot less.

I built a solid state Heathkit stereo when I was 14.

Much cooler than that, my pop had a tube Heathkit he built with separate tuner, preamp and two amplifiers. He made BIG mid-century looking cabinets (walnut veneer) with Wharfdale speakers kicking away inside.

He'd put on Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, crank it up and pour a couple of scotches for himself and mom. Off to the races they'd go :)

This looks very cool (hot). I went to look for this and it is unavailable at any of their US distributors (big disclaimers about no availability in 2008). I wonder if there are safety issues with this??? Anyways, one US web site says you can get on a waiting list and it is priced at $239 - $269 plus accessories.

Just for grins I checked Canadian Tire and they don't list it on their product roster.
